So I have a computer and I purchased a new motherboard/case. I'm just reformattin and reinstalling windows. Everytime I install windows it will reformat a partition just fine, but when it's copying files(still in.."dos") or after it first copies files and after it restarts it self, the computer will just shut down.
I've tried taking out various components and I have no clue what the problem could be. Any help? |

the copies i am trying are genuine, and i deleted all partitions on the hard drive before touching any of it.
I tried many differnc opies, and took out all parts but the essentials for my PC, it now gets PAST the initla(blue screen dos based) copying files and teh compute restarts when the setup resumes (gui with the 39 minutes remaining and the foru progress dots in the bottom right), the computer restarts almost immediately. EDIT: the problem is still happening, however, after removing the CD from it's drive I noticed that eeven when waiting for hte user to specify a new location for the win XP files, the setup shuts down around the same time period after the computer has booted up. It's frustrating Last edited by nkwu; Dec 24th, 2006 at 11:05 PM.. |

If it shuts down after a certain amount of time - regardless of whether or not it is copying as you have now indicated - the likely culprit is overheating.
First check that all of your fans are spinning/blowing air (power supply, cpu, and video card if applicable). If they seem to be in order your CPU fan/heatsink may not be making proper contact with your CPU - did you apply any thermal grease when you installed it in the new motherboard? If you have applied thermal grease - your heatsink may not be seated properly, try to reseat your heatsink/fan and see what happens. If all else fails, download something like the UBCD and run some diagnostics. If any test fails, or at any point your system locks up or shuts down - you have a thermal issue or a hardware problem.
