Why No Forum On Grants/busaries!?

The topic says it all.

This being RFD, we should have a forum to help us poor students get free money from Grants, Bursaries and Scholarships!

Every year I get $3000 - $5000 in free cash simply because I apply to them! (granted I am a O.S.A.P applicant, which means I can apply to grants and bursaries due "financial situation")

The gov is giving away tons of "free" $$$ and it has nothing to do w/ grades. (you just need to be a "dedicated student")

I apply to everything, and usually get really lucky every year.

Two bursaries I have been give already are Fellowship For Studying In Frnech (FFSF) *$1500 per year* and Queen Elizabeth Grant *$2000 per year*.

Most of these bursaries are "renewable" each year too.

If I was denied by OSAP due to my parents making more money than they should be, would I still qualify for any of these grants? I've been too lazy to apply since OSAP said my estimate is $0.

I am 99% sure you NEED to be an OSAP applicant to get these bursaries, but schools have some based on grades, the program you take etc.. (which I apply too and do get every once and a while.)

I have O.S.A.P because my parents are divorced, and my mom is basically retired (she works on call for teaching, and makes like no real money) and since I "don't talk to my dad", I use my moms financial info on the forms. (my parents don't pay for any of my schooling though)

If anyone has anything that their school offers, def post it.

My feeling is that bursaries are like welfare...you should apply only if you are really poor and NEED them to continue your education. Otherwise, save them for the truly needy. That's why I don't apply.

Well, I am somewhat truly needy: I am paying the full $8000 bill myself, with my own money, saved from jobs outside of my household. My bank account is going to be zero within the next few months.

OSAP is depended on family income (ie parents) as well as your personal.

But I hear what f00kie is saying. I pay $9000+ every yr.

f00kie, if you parents makes enuf for you to get $0 OSAP, then you should ask your parents to lend a helping hand.

I personally don't apply to bursaries/grants, but on occasions, I'm automatically qualified for some at UofT. So it's an added bonus for me to pay back osap after I graduate.

I wish I qualified for bursaries. My mom doesn't work and my dad supports our family of 4. This year, uni will cost me $12 000. I got one bursary my whole uni career! Where did you find these?

I also made the student mistake of not sending in my actual OSAP papers, which could have landed me a large Queen Elizabeth's scholarship, as my mark was just under or over 90%, but then again, it was my dad's fault that he didn't sign the papers.

How do you qualify for bursaries? I just sent in my OSAP papers, so they should be in real soon. I also need to somehow maybe tell OSAP or UofT that my parents refuse to pay for my education - would that help?

Who would I speak to about this and the bursaries?

OSAP don't care if your parents won't pay, if they can afford to pay, they assume you can convince them to help. That is unless your parents have medical expense or something.

But if you don't apply to OSAP or quality for OSAP, ur not going to qualify for most bursary. Your next bet would be applying to scholarships, if you search around UT's website, u'll find a few.

For those loving OSAP, just remember it's not free. When you graduate and you are 40K in debt, don't complain when you find it'll take all 14 years to pay back.
Take the least amount of OSAP money you need
After that, apply to university Bursaries. Those are 100%. As well, look into on-campus jobs. They usually pay well considering the ease of the work.

They don't give out bursaries to just anyone. There are so many people that apply, that are actually in financial need, that dont get any. However, the people that do get the bursaries get quite a bit of money.
