Yen: I want to use the green tea powder to make a semi freddo (kind of like ice cream) so the leaves really wouldn't work -- I don't think I'd want to chew them.

I also recommend J-Town
I think I've seen that stuff at T&T but most chinese supermarkets should carry it for cheaper... maybe the Soon Lee at their various locations

Actually the powder is the really good stuff, I had some in my Japanese class last semester. I dont know what differentiates it from green tea leaves, but it's got a much better taste to it.

The stuff you're looking for is called Matcha tea. It can be very, very expensive, but if you're just using it for food preparation, go with the cheapest you can find - it's more the texture than the taste you're after, so a low grade won't have any negative effects and will be substantially cheaper. Afraid I don't know any tea shops in the GTA, but call around and ask for Matcha; any decent independent tea shop should have it, ditto Japanese importers.

Good luck!

if you ever visit vancouver, head over to infuzeteahouse.com. These guys sell matcha tea and have a few stores in town.
