What's a Lowballer?

noob question here...in the BST when they say no lowballers what does that mean?

an a -hole, id name some......but later

someone who gives a unreasonable low price offer on an item.

everything sells for an unreasonably low price these days. you can get shirts for 3.5 now. it used to be 10 bucks was the cheapest shirt. people try to sell used old technology for more than what modern technology is selling for new in the stores.

A low baller is a person who offers to purchase something at an unreasonably low price.


There are no rules to state what is unreasonably low but offering less then 60% of the selling price is probably too low.

A lowballer is a fairly athletic person with strong legs. He first baits you in by saying he will buy your items and agreeing to meet up with you in person locally for the deal. Upon contact, he says he will inspect the items in question to ensure everything is in working order and there is no deception involved. And then it happens; a swift kick and you are down. You are left sprawled down on the location with your hands grasped over your balls trying to alleviate the pain. You groan and open your eyes to see him sprinting away from you, faster than you could possibly ever run; in his arms is all your precious hardware. You don’t know which hurts more, your swollen balls or losing a couple hundred dollars worth of computer hardware. All you know is that there are a lot of people pointing and laughing at you at the moment.

thanks for clearing that up...all this time I thought that a lowballer was someone that just likes low ba...ahhh nevermind...

There are always going to be lowballers. These people are morons. I have friend that thinks everything in life is free.

Lets face it people. The reason why people are selling things here is to make some money. Otherwise, just throw away your junk.

Some member even has a signature saying that profiteers will not be tolerated. That is just a stupid statement. Plain and simple. If you are not here to profit, then throw away your stuff.

It is okay to make a profit, as long as

1. You are being fair and not charging more than what can be purchased retail
2. Make sure the product is in perfect condition and offer some guarantee
3. See rule 1

But before you make an unreasonable offer. Ask yourself this question. If I owned the item as was selling it. How much would I want?

Similarly if you are selling a product. Ask yourself, what would I pay for something like this.

Chances are, if you are truthfull with your answers. Most other people will agree and you will sell your items quickly.

actually...lowballers are not morons at all, they offer a low price for an item, if they dont get the item, they lose nothing, if they get it near their lowball price, they got a great deal. I personally think there is no real problem with lowballing, if someone wants to lowball, it doesnt hurt anybody and maybe a good laugh. perhaps the lowballer does believe the price they are offering is not unreasonable, and most people ask in the optimistic range of what they get expect to get for the item they are selling

Agreed. The person saying they are morons is very judgemental. Anways like said...It can't hurt to try. Just be polite about it and say sorry, I can't do it for you at that price or sorry i can't go that low...And go on with business.

It's not that hard. Give me a break.

Lowballers are brainless people willing to buy your P IV 3 Ghz laptop for 300.00, but only if it had a DVD burner and wi-fi.

I sell items on Ebay (you can tell me a thousand times that Ebay items are overpriced - just another reason to sell there) and sometimes I list them here too.

On Ebay, I get about 1 dollar per megahert (cpu power)....so a PII 233 will sell for some 200.00....I list the same laptop here, and funny folks offer me 60.00, "to take this burden off my hands"...

Now, why on earth would I prefer to get 60.00 when I KNOW for sure I can get 200.00 ?

The point is that I'm not saying that 200.00 is the best price on this item (just an example) but a "market price", and the reason I say market price is because it sell for this price every single time. Many buyers are in remote locations in Canada where the closest computer store sells a similar item for 350.00...so 200.00 is a deal !

I stated in my postings that lowballers should not contact me, and when they insist I either reply with an insult or just add them to my ignore list.

I'm sure some people will read my statments here and say "this guy a a jerk" - botton line is that at the end of the month I have to pay my mortgage and I sell laptops for a living...so lowballers are the scumbag crawling on earth, in my opinion.

Lowballers are annoying, but sometimes it is not their fault entirely. For example, someone wanted to trade me a vid card + cash for my vid card. It was a 8500 AIW, which or course, holds a higher value than an 8500 because of the AIW features. Since I do not use them, however, I could only offer him the $80 that the card was worth. This may have been considered lowballing, but I could not offer him anymore as it was not worth more than that to me. Do you see my point?
