what do you consider general viewing?
Forrest gump isn't a movie you can really watch with kids since its pretty graphic.

The Shawshank redemption.

One of the greatest stories on film.

Another good one? Field of Dreams.

Sneakers with Redford. Good movie, no swearing for a change.

Ray

It just one of those movies I constantly watch, as there is something about Ray that's just... uh whats the word... just really how he defied the world by making a great name for himself even with the disabilities he had.

Dead Poet's Society is another good one.

There will never be a best "general viewing" movie.

I personally didn't like Forest gump, it was pretty boring to me.

On the other hand I loved Walk The Line, but I'm sure a bunch of people would be quick to say they loved gump and hated walk the line.

It's all personal opinion.

Scenes of war, people dying, drug use, sex scenes. It's all a pretty tame PG-13 but still not ideal family viewing.

Princess Bride.

It has everything, from young to old it appeals to every age group.

A love story
Revenge
Action
Pirates
Rodents of Unusual size

It has everything ever needed in a movie.
