Default Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition II - 2TB Triple Interface External HDD

Buy.com Canada just got the Western Digital 2TB hard drive in stock today, and they've lowered their price. It's listed at $552.89, and you get 5% off your order as a promo right now, bringing the price down to $525.25 before taxes! And free shipping! [edit: sold out in a hurry, and the price has gone up. See below for a better deal from Costco!]

http://www.ca.buy.com/prod/Western_D...205073841.html

For 2TB of storage this is a hot price!

By comparison, Costco.ca just LOWERED their price too. (Edit: on the My Book WORLD EDITION) They're selling it for $549.99. http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product....rodid=10305569

Other retailers are selling these drives for well over $600.

Just FYI, the one @ buy.com is Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition II - 2TB Triple Interface: USB2.0 FW400 and FW800 (NOT Ethernet)

The one from Costco is MyBook WORLD EDITION II (includes Gigabit Ethernet)

VERY different models you are comparing here. The World Edition is a lot more versatile for accessing data around the world.

Very good deal on the Costco model - World Edition

Yes, you can access data from around the world....provided you pay the monthly service charge.

the drive isn't that fast ... also it has horrible bloatware software that needs to be running for you to be able to access the data on the drive.

Sorry .. I am referring to the World Edition, the one with the built-in ethernet port.

Can't use as a media storage. I might as well share my 8GB USB key if I just want to share some pictures and word documents.

xwar - I have a WD MyBook WE 1TB on my network at home, and use it to stream video files - no problem. I don't stream through a PS3, but it works for me. I've done MP3, AVI & MPEG II - no issues.

Now I see the light. Access Anywhere is different from network share. You can stream any file across the network but not through "Access Anywhere" across the internet.

I think WD just shot themselves in the foot. Wouldn't restricting through file extension name just inconveniences legitimate users who want to do direct video or audio streaming through the internet?

Those who really want to 'share' the content of the hard disk to whole world would have the files compressed with rar or zip to save storage space anyway.
