I bought an LG upconverting DVD player couple months back.
It didn't recognize any DVDs I burned using DVD-RW, while my RCA one works on them perfectly fine.
Its funny to see the writtings on the LG player's box: "super multi-format, compatibility", something like that.

I don't know if mine is the same as this one though.

I think LG has 3 upconverting DVD player, the 7832 which don't play DIVX and has no slot for sd, compact flash slot etc (discontinued) the 531 which can play DIVX and has slots for the above (discontinued) I have both and they both play DVD-RW or + RW fine, latest one which came out earlier this year is the 731 (don't own it so no idea but according to digital home its PQ is not as good as the discontinued ones due to 731 uses different brand chipset)
