Way back when my husband and I started dating, for some reason or another, we were unable to see each other on the Feb 14th. Imagine how disappointed I was to miss our 1st Valentine's Day
. He knew I was very disappointed and tried to make it seem like it was all OK that we were celebrating on the 15th.Well, one thing he did was he bought me a card that had the tale of Valentine's Day on it. It stated that (now I'm going by memory here) originally Valentine's Day was the 15th of February - something to do with St. Valentine's death. It made me feel a lot better. We decided to keep the tradition of celebrating the 15th -- it's actually worked to our benefit as we're not paying all of those inflated prices on everything

I looked it up....here's the proof:
Roman Roots The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday's roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine's Day. |
