Is there such things as a good mail forwarding service that gives you a US mailing address (Not PO Box) for forwarding to Canada? Any experiences with them?

Not that I have heard. But I'm sure they exist.

Are you looking to buy in the US because it's cheaper?

If so, good luck. By the time you pay Duty, shipping, tax, more duty, more tax, more shipping, brokerage fees, the deal evaporates.

I remember seeing a post about someone who got their stuff delivered to Washington, but I don't remember how they did it or what it was called. I'll try to look for it.

Yes, any questions about buying and picking up in USA just ask. If you live in the Greater Vancouver Area, you can send your stuff to Point Roberts, Washington and pick it up there. They have 2 places in Point Roberts that offer this service: The Letter Carrier, and (I think) Security Mail Services. I believe Blaine, Washington also has this type of service.

I've been bringing stuff back regularly on a commerical basis since 1999. There are a couple of places right by the border in Niagara Falls/Buffalo area. There is a mailboxes etc at 1623 military road (wegmans plaza) that I always use. It's about 5 minutes from the Queenston Lewiston bridge. There's actually another similiar place before the mailboxes etc right beside the interstate but I called a couple of years ago and they weren't any better than MBE.

All you do is call them and tell them to expect a package. Order your produce and ship it to your name@the MBE address. MBE will sign for it and call you. cross the border and pay the 15% on the way home. (Caveat - there's a different process if your import is for business).

Their number is 716-298-4461 (mods, pls delete # if I'm out of line). They are well versed in Canadians doing this.

Want a case in point? You can get a brand new Dell 1600SC server on ebay.com right now for about $850US, with 2ghz and 2X73gig scsi HD. Retail on that up here is about $2700Cdn. I'd say that's about half price, and worth the trip across the border.

And if you go to the MBE, there is a sub shop right beside them that makes a killer Canadian bacon sub. Wish they made them like that in Canada .

I have just used the services of "The Letter Carrier" http://www.thelettercarrier.com based on the info in this thread, and have to say I am very impressed. They recieved the package, forwarded it via USPS(no brokerage fee) and put the appropriate customs tag on it, I gave them my VISA # for shipping charges and that was it. Didn't have to go there. Very good service if you absolutely require a US address, very cheap too. Check out the rates:

Package Receiving Charges
1 to 24 Lbs $1.85
25 to 70 Lbs $2.35
71 to 150 Lbs $3.00
CODs $4.50
Standard Pallet $5.50
Phone Notification $0.75

Well, I've been hacking around the past week on this. And after three and a half years of going across the border myself, I've finally found someone that is doing this daily and importing into Toronto.

If you're interested, and can provide somewhat regular shipments (3 or 4 boxes a week or so?) I can get you hooked up. They're coming back every day with a partly empty truck they would like to fill.

Is it just me, or does this forum rock? thanks to the mods/admins for such a fabulous site.

No Problem. If anyone's planning on importing that way for business, there's a similiar but different process (basically clearing the customs paperwork yourself so that it doesn't cost anything) email or pm me and i"ll provide details.
