Hey
I just obtained a 12" FA Sub from my uncle. It pushes 600W. Im wondering if i can hook it up to my computer? My main speakers connected to my computer are thru a home audio system. I do have an extra amplifier lying around too. I connected the subwoofer to my external amp, but I don't get the "boom" i want to get from it. I can hear the actual song, including voices...aren't sub supposed to play only the bass? BTW, when i was testing the sub wasn't in a box. Which could be the problem? That my home amp doesn't push enough? Or is it that it isn't in an enclosed box? Or, is it just not compatible with home systems. Someone please help, TIA.

If that sub needs 600w RMS, there is no way an average home amp will push it. You would have to limit the highest frequency that the sub will put out so that you don't hear the full range. One problem is that it is a CAR subwoofer, not a computer subwoofer.

And it needs a box. You hear speach and stuff because you are driving all frequencies to it. It needs to have a Low Pass Filter to stop them. Also i dont know what brand FA is but i am going to assume thats 600 watts max so 250- 300 RMS?

To get more power from my home amp, should I bridge the connection? So i'm guessing that my problem is that I dont have a box. I'm thinking non-vented is the way to go? Let's try a box first, then i'll think about the low band-pass filter. Thanks for the responses so far, keep em coming! [I wouldnt mind if Masterballer took a look at this, hehe]

You Could try and get a car amp and a decent computer power supply and use the 12v rails to power it. Problem with using a av receiver is it puts out full range and not nearly enough power. Also make sure your reciever is ok with a 4ohm load or you might end up with a blown amp.

UPDATE:
My computer has onboard 5.1 surround. I used the subwoofer/centre output from that to decode the bass frequencies and fed it to my amp. I now have a seperate control for my sub. The sub works. Not that great (possibly due to the box), but it works. Man, i really need a sub box. Soon the screws are going to rip the cardboard.. hehe I also made a subwoofer box (for the interim) true RFDer style. Check it out! ![]() I laugh everytime I see it.

at least its 'sealed' for tighter bass response is that 20 ga wire powering the sub? I hope not.. and how do you get screws to stay in cardboard? |

I love that design. That's exactly like something I would cook up on a Sunday afternoon.

when you hear the fire trucks sirens coming to your house .. it not the speakers... it the fire created by that fire hazard you call a sub... Please for the love of god move it away from the piles of paper on your bookshelves ... Good Job if it not a danger to your house and others

ahaaaaaaahahahahahahahha DUUUDE... LMFAO.. wow.. that is the funniest ish I've ever seen. Dont take it personal or anything.. if anything you just made my day. I applaud you for your innovation ![]() lol.. ps; the box wont catch fire.. the speaker will either fall out from reverse pressure or from the sheer vibration before that would happen Last edited by MkmBandit; Oct 29th, 2007 at 09:28 PM.. |
