Default Today is DVD's 10th Anniversary!

Okay, it's past midnight so it was yesterday. LOL It's been TEN YEARS since DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) launched here in North America!

Did you jump right in or wait it out for prices to drop?

I rented it first at Jumbo Video (missed them), Toshiba with The Fugitive and was amazed with the Technology.

After a fews months, sometime in July/August I spent almost $1k on my first DVD players, Sony DVP-3000 (I still have it, LOL)! Picked it up at the Sony Store, was $850 ($899.99 retail price) and got free Austin Powers DVD! It's funny thinking back when 20th Century Fox and Disney refused to support it because of DiVX. LOL They never learn do they.

This is when I got into the whole HomeTheater...I upgraded my Components back then and again after ten years, today with the launch HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

All but 50 of my 600 DVD's I collected for that time are gone. 50+ have been replaced with High-Def.

Can't wait to do it all over again in 10 years! LOL

Bought my first player around June or July 2001. $329. I bought it mostly for the feature that it could play MP3s, but rarely ever used it for that purpose .

I held onto CDs for a long time and refused to go the dvd path until 2003 actually! LOL. I got my first dvd burner then and in 2006 I bought my divx dvd player. I never needed to buy dvds all those years as CDs were still the norm, well for the stuff I did at least.

We paid around $300 for an RCA DVD player. Worked great, and we were amazed by the menu and chapters. It died on us last year (RIP) and our first movie that we bought was Star Wars 1. SO Im thinking we must have bought ours like 2000 because we rented ALOT of movies. Almost 2 per weekend. Now that I can burn movies I realize how much money was wasted on renting.

I jumped into the DVD scene right away. I'm always an early adopter. I also bought my HDTV the same year. That was 1999. I first bought the RCA DVD player which sucked and ended up buying the Toshiba progressive DVD player for $1200 CAD. They only had 3 progressive players at that time, the Pioneer, SONY and the Toshiba. I still have over 400 DVDs in my collection and don't think I'll be getting rid of any of them. I now have about 20 HD DVDs and 10 BRs in my collection. I have stopped buying DVDs in favour of the Hi Def versions.

I actually bought my first DVD (Elizabeth) before I bought my first DVD player (I was young and dumb, go figure!). I bought my first player (a Panasonic that I had until very recently and still worked perfectly) in Jan./Feb. 2002. It was about $300, IIRC.

Fast forward to today where my house has seven DVD players. Technology, gotta love it!

Still have my very first DVD player from Dec 1998....a Toshiba 2108. Paid like $700 plus taxes back then.

Today, I just bought an Xbox 360 add-on, a HD-DVD plus several HD-DVDs. 10% off at FS Friends and Family sale. Was sitting on the fence waiting for the winner of HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray...but got tired of waiting. Can't wait until the Matrix collection is released on HD-DVD.

I had a Laser Disc player and I remember the Laser Disc people were trashing the DVD format . Then people started to dump their LD collections for 'cheap'. I finally bought a Toshiba for about $400 and got The Matrix for my first DVD.
