Default Time Change Affecting Infant...

When our daughter was born fromn day 1 until 6 months co-slept with us. We looked at both sides of this topic and felt it was the best thing for us. At 6 months we felt it was time to move the baby into her own room and crib but were dreading this because we figured she was not going to tae well to this idea.....the first night she cried fr about 10 minutes and then went to sleep, waking every 2-3 hours for feeding....I was putting her to bed at around 9 pm each night and the transition was very smooth....We then thought maybe she wasn't going to bed early enough so I moved it up 1 hour to 8pm and that seemed as well to be going great. Then the time changed moving up 1 hour and putting her to bed at night has been hell since. I kept with the 8pm and that wasn't going well then figured her clock was screwy and that was 7pm to her so I moved it later 1 hour to 9pm, same no success. We put her to bed and she just screams and cries and doesn't stop.....The most we have left it at is about 20 minutes without intervention. She just doesn't seem to want to go to bed by herself anymore out f the blue....she'll sleep on me or my wife no problem but not alone anymore after doing so well for about 2 months....very frustrating....I am of the opinion no matter how hard let her cry for a couple days and she'll get straightened out but my wife can't handle it....not sure what to do.

Thumbs up

I actually love the time change, all my kids sleep longer now...I guess their internal clock has not changed which is great for me...I love the extra hour of sleeping

I like you believe in CIO (cry it out), and as tough as it may seem it maked the infant more independant. There are many debates on this topic, and you either do or don't.

Are you certain she is not gassy, teething or hot? Some babies hate being too warm, although it's how we'd be comfortable.

I don't think it gas or temperature.....she does have 2 teeth coming that are already out and don't seem to be giving her problems, we keep checking for others.....not sure what it is but I hope it works itself out soon....I do love having her sleep on me at night while I watch TV but as strange as it sounds I think it is selfish for me to do that for an extended period of time after her bed time because routine is essential for a child.

Who wouldn't...dh still loves when they curl up on him at night!!

I agree with you about the routine. We coslept with #1 and although as first time parents it worked well with us, we didn't do it with the other two, ever! They were definitely much easier children!

This may be the key point, you never want to make a habit of letting your baby go to sleep on you. Babies change a lot in the first year, so the transition back to wakefulness is not that surprising. From her perspective, maybe she's now old enough that she knows that crying will mean she gets to snuggle and sleep on a parent? What baby wouldn't want that, given the choice? I can imagine how frustrating it must be, though.

Is she still waking ever 2-3 hours for feeding? I see that as a potential problem as well. By that age, they should be able to easily sustain themselves for 6-8 hours without a feed.

Yes she wakes still every 2-3 hours for a feeding....she started on solids at 6 months but is not eating solids well. She basically only likes prunes and appricots and even at that she is not eating lots and lots of it.....that has been another struggle on its own.....we figure she'll start sleeping longer than 2-3 hours once she really starts eating solids....our pediatrician told us not to talk to her about "problems" like this until 9 months as they are not "problems". Sounds kind of harsh bt she is very good....so it's almost 9 months anyways and if these patterns continue we'll bring them up with her.

I found something quite interesting tonight that is most likely related to what she is going through, others may find interesting: http://moxie.blogs.com/askmoxie/2006...t_are_sle.html

She has just learned to crawl and today actually she crawled the furthest without going back down on her stomach.....
