Software to Increase Monitor Resolution past Native?

My friend told me about a program that will increase his monitor's resolution higher than what's stated as the maximum.

I thought he referred to changing the settings of the display adapter to show modes not supported by the monitor (where you use the mouse to scroll to the edges of the screen), but I was told this was something else.

I've tried searching a bit, but couldn't find any info towards such a program.

Would any of you know anything about this?

Thanks.

True ... Why do you think it would work if it is already beyond its maximum capability ?

Your monitor is going to fry. I've also never heard of this before...

They make it hard to get/find, because what usually happens is that a hardware component gives up the ghost... For a short while you can overstretch it.. then it overheats, good bye. Stick with the manufactureres tolerences, be happy, no worries.

I think your talking about Powerstrip

This is not recommended for general use . You can damage your monitor or
mess up your video card settings.

I use it it set my ATI 7500 to display HDTV resolutions. :|

I just wanted to see if such a program existed.

If Powerstrip is it (which seems so), I thank you spider for letting me know.
