The Operator Card is currently having a sale on the application for the pleasurecraft operators card. Usual price is $29, but it's been $25 for the last little while. It's now dropped down to $19.99 as a red tag sale event

This card will become mandatory as of Sept 2009 for anyone driving a boat (it's already mandatory for people on jetskis). This site is great because after passing the exam, they send you two cards (one as a spare) which is amazing as I'm always misplacing mine. I've used this site before to get my card and so have some friends so it's a pretty great deal

TheOperatorCard.ca is the Internet Home Testing system of Best Boating Ltd, a Transport Canada accredited safe boating course provider. Transport Canada's website of Course Providers is here and you will see Best Boating in the third position. as below:

The accredited course material, tests, and training manual used in this site have been certified and approved by Transport Canada. These training materials are the exclusive property of TheOperatorCard.ca and Best Boating Ltd.

Transport Canada has authorized Best Boating Ltd and it's agents to provide accredited boater proficiency course and tests and issue The the Pleasure Craft Operator Card to recreational boaters.

Nope, no expiry on the license. You just need to pass the exam (which is proctored by anyone you know). I suggest that everyone get this card this year before it becomes mandatory in Sept (end of the season for most folks). I saw quite a few OPP out on the waterways last year checking jetskis for their license and writing big fines for those that didn't have them. Also this is Canada wide since boat licensing is a federal responsibility.

Good timing, with the state of affairs right now, some are saying that there will be a lot of "toys" for sale very soon... have been hoping to get a boat for a while now!

Not sure if the link will work (http://www.tc.gc.ca/marinesafety/deb.../pcoc/menu.htm) but they are listed on Transport Canada's 'Accredited Course Providers'

FYI, it sounds like many people that operate boats do need this right now too http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=15182&tid=024 (not just jet skis; any motorized boat under 4m (13 feet)). After Sept 2009, it includes boats over 4M as well.

What is a Pleasure Craft?

Anyone who drives a motorized Pleasure Craft under 4 metres in length must carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. To give Canadians time to adapt to the new regulations, Transport Canada is implementing the new law in phases:

September 15, 1999 - Now in effect
All operators born after April 1, 1983.

September 15, 2002 - Now in effect
All operators of power driven pleasure craft under 4m, includes PWCs.

September 15, 2009
All operators of power driven pleasure craft.
Pleasure Craft

Examples of pleasure craft:

* Powerboats
* Personal watercraft (PWC) – i.e. Jet Ski
* Canoes and kayaks
* Sailboats or sailboards
* Airboats
* Hovercraft (Air cushion vehicles, ACV)

If your water craft is fitted with a motor (whether it is turned on or not) you must have a Pleasure Card Operator Card.

I think this is the official one actually... I have seen some others, resellers, where you pay for umpteen pins, then redistribute them you become the proctor and can charge a little more to make a profit, that one seemed shady to me.

This is the website where I did my test a couple of years ago..It cost me $30 back then but everything went smoothly and I got my 2 cards in about a month.

There are no 'official' ones, this is like 'Drive Clean' for cars, government puts out the regs and then private companies apply to be allowed to provide the service. (IMHO, this is just a money grab. In theory it's a good idea but in practice the implementation is basically useless, it won't make it any safer, it is mostly not enforced and the honest / safe drivers are the ones that shell out more in the end).
