Default Paypal question.

Hey all,
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot but I am not quite sure where to ask really. Basically I have agreed to sell my laptop to a member with 0 posts. They are going to pay me via paypal and then come to pick up the laptop. If they send me the payment via paypal am I completely safe or do I have to worry about any chance of being screwed over? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

if they are coming to pick it up...tell them to pay by cash since u will avoid the outrageous paypal fee...I as a buyer got scammed via paypal but never got my money back (check my post in 'shopping discussion' for US$850) and paypal wont do anything about it...I say if they r doing a local pickup tell them to pay cash..

Paypal gives you the illusion you are protected. Don't fall for it. I am in the process of fighting for some of my money back from them. I 2nd the 'bring cash' / Money Order.

Paypal only protects you if you shipped the item, not local pickup.

Rule of thumb is, local pickup = cash on delivery.

If they say they cannot provide cash when picking it up, then that's a big RED FLAG that this guy's a scammer.

Thanks for the info guys. After asking to receive payment in cash I have not heard from the user again. Thanks a lot for saving me from being ripped off!

On another note, should I be posting this person's user name anywhere on this forum as a sign of potential scammer?

I got scammed by someone, through ebay, and through paypal, and no one will do anything to help me get my money back, or even try to catch the scamer.

Avoid using paypal at all costs.

Anyone in Montreal want to make a visit to a certain address?

Paypal only protects if the sender is fully verified and has a confirmed adress, and a established history helps. The 3% fee on 850 will be hefty.

There's only fees if the buyer pays through paypal using a Credit Card. A straight bank transfer through Paypal is free. But then again, you don't know if that Buyer stole/hacked someone's paypal account unless you be a tight ass and ask for I.D upon local pickup and do background checks

well you can't assume the buyer is a scammer just for not replying! What if he has no cash on hand right now and wanted to pay through credit card via paypal?

I don't intend to call the user a scammer, but I was thinking of posting as a warning. Just to say that as soon as I spoke of paying via cash instead of paypal the user cut off all communication and I never heard from them. Had the scenario you mentioned been the case I imagine they would have said something instead of just not responding.
