Everybody needs toilet paper, but not everyone knows how to get the best deal on it.

There are several factors to consider:

1.) Quality
2.) Quantity
3.) Price

I guess number of ply could be another consideration, but I think the majority use 2-ply, so that'll be the basis here.

The first thing to consider when buying toilet paper is the quality. Do you like the ultra-premium super thick and absorbent paper like Charmin, or is the standard stuff like Royale adequate? Or is the cheapest of the cheap just fine for you? Obviously the better quality paper will cost a little bit more, so you'll need to take that into consideration.

The second thing to consider is quantity. The determining factor here is NOT the number of rolls you get in the package. It is the number of sheets you get per roll. It's not sufficient to just see that it's a "single roll" or a "double roll" because there is no set standard. Some single rolls are 100 sheets, some are 150 sheets, and some are 176 sheets. So for some brands, their double roll is only 200 sheets, which is almost the same as another brand's single roll!

And of course, the thing that most people pay attention to is price. What you should do determining the value of any toilet paper deal is to find out the number of sheets you get per dollar using the following formula:

(Number Rolls x Number of Sheets) / Price

Quick rough reference guide:

Premium toilet paper:
<400 sheets/dollar - Regular Price
~400 sheets/dollar - Regular Sale Price
~600 sheets/dollar - Good Sale Price
~800 sheets/dollar - Excellent Sale Price
>800 sheets/dollar - Incredible Sale Price

Standard toilet paper:
<600 sheets/dollar - Regular Price
~600 sheets/dollar - Regular Sale Price
~800 sheets/dollar - Good Sale Price
~1000 sheets/dollar - Excellent Sale Price
>1000 sheets/dollar - Incredible Sale Price

Shouldn't this be in Shopping discussion? Good idea though.

But I'm intending to regularly update it with the weekly deals I find... the first post or two is more discussion just to get it going...

I was getting tired of doing the math all the time with the creative ads whenever there was a sale. I wondered, is it really a deal?
It was only a matter of time before an "Official" thread was made for toilet paper, lol.
Good job InvisibleSoul.
Thanks sent.

Another item to reference are the 36-roll packs of Scott that you can find at RCSS and Costco among other places.

The most remarkable feature of this brand is that they somehow cram 500 sheets into each individually wrapped roll that is the same size or smaller than other brand's double rolls. Obviously the quality isn't ultra-premium, but it's not terrible either. It's probably one notch lower than Royale and Cottonelle, but perfectly adequate for most.

Regular price for this is about $19...

36 rolls x 500 sheets / $19 = 947 sheets per dollar

Sometimes, but very rarely, it will go on for sale for under $17...

36 rolls x 500 sheets / $17 = 1059 sheets per dollar

Good stuff!

You might want to simply keep updating the opening post to display the best deals in each of the major metropolitan areas . . . much simpler than wading through an ever longer thread looking for the relevant posts.

+1

I think we should create more threads to include toothpaste, Dishwashing liquid, etc... items used on a daily basis.

Thanks for your efforts!

I mean, I thought about that... but I'm not sure whether that would work.

For one, I will personally handle the GVR and nationwide deals every week, or as I come across them, so I can definitely update the first post with those... but I'm not sure I'd be able to handle keeping it up to date with deals specific to other regions.

Perhaps I could try...

Wait a minute. "Official", as in there have been several unofficial ones before it and this one needs to be deemed the "Official" one? Hmmm...

But seriously, this is a great idea and I agree with the member above that the deals on necessities like toothpaste and soap and so on could use their own sticky thread. Recession anyone?

I know, I know... I've always been weary of "official" threads myself...

But I was thinking if I called it official, people would now use this thread for all future toilet paper deals instead of creating new ones for individual deals.

I hate the TP that flakes away as you're using it.
