Hello all,
Any other RFDers check out Nuit Blanche last night? I posted a thread about it in the "Freebies" section but there didn't seem to be much interest! Hopefully some others here checked it out as I really enjoyed it... I ended up staying awake until 7am....(well, 7:30 by the time I got home!)... Highlights - free corn roast (was yummie), the "ballroom dancing" (i.e. big rubber ball fight), CN Tower at midnight (needed to reserve in advance), and just the general atmosphere. |

My sister ran "Nightswim" - did anyone make it to that? I saw some pics and it looked quite cool....big dark party with underwater music and lights at Trinity Bellwoods.

I helped to run the "Maize Barbacoa 2006" installation (yes, the corn roast in Yorkville) and we had an amazing turnout. At one point, we had nearly 1500 people pass through in one hour. We gave out 840 ears of corn, all personally roasted by the artist himself, Ron Benner. In spite of the rain, so many people came out and enjoyed the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, making it IMHO the best free cultural event of the year. Since I was pretty much bound to the Yorkville area, I only saw a few of the many curated installations. My favourite was definitely Fujiko Nakaya's "Fog Installation" along Philosopher's Walk. By 2:30 am, the fog was quite heavy and rolling along the walkway, giving the area an eerie, magical feel. I can't wait to see how my digital photos turned out. (I'm still running on too little sleep, so will have to wait until tomorrow to check the photos on a screen larger than 2"). I'll be curious to see what other feedback is posted on the event. Thanks to all who came out and participated!

Damn, sounds like I missed out. I'm sorry to say but I was turned off by the rain so didn't want to make the trip all the way down from Markham. I hope they hold this event next year...cause I'll definitely make an effort to attend.

When we went by the corn roast thing, we didn't realize it was free plus the woman doing it there at the time said they were taking a 15 minute break cause the coals needed to warm up.
Overall, a really nice night/morning. Still shocked at how packed the streets were. It was like daytime in the night. I hope this turns into a yearly thing cause some of those exhibits were pretty neat. We were expecting just art displays that you look at, comment, and walk away. A lot of them, pretty much all of them actually, were interactive in some form. |

I went from start time to about midnight. Yeah I didn't know the corn was for free, so we wandered next door to the tent for free chocolate samples hehe.
I wanted to go to the nightswim, but it was all the way in the west end. I just stuck to the first two zones. My favourites were the fog and ball dance club

I thought the whole idea was graet. It was cool to see so many people out enjoying the city.
However I thought most of the exhibits were extremly lame. I was in the yorkville / UT / ROM area and didn't find anything too great. Seeing an image projected is not my idea of art. |
