I use Agent which is a fairly popular newsreader. Even Outlook Express has a basic newsreader capability.
Newsgroups have not attracted the legal problems like torrents. My local service provider has a news server but it's limited so I have a monthly subscription to a large US news server. |

As someone that is first starting out with newsgroup, I suggest Newsleecher. It has a very easy to use interface for mainly binary files. The super search function makes searching for files super easy as well.
for a free alternative try Grabit. It is the best free newsgroup reader IMO. As for nzb indexing sites for easy newsgroup usage i'm sure you can find them on google.Oh prepare to pay for newsgroup access because most service providers don't provide newgroups access anymore. Those that does won't have the completion and retention as those paid ones. |

Most, if not all, newsgroup providers also require authentication (login & password) to get on their server. It will be provided once you send them payment. Giganews (if that's who you mean), is a great if not expensive provider. You can go with usenetserver.com or newshosting.com for cheaper unlimited.

No one really explicitly said it, but newsgroups are many many times better than torrents. a decent host will have content back for around 75 days worth of downloads (essentially anything that was uploaded in the last 75 days will be available for you to download). Content usually is the same as what you would find on torrents, so basically everything. The best part though is the speed. The good newgroup hosts will have no problem sending you content at 100mbit if your connection can go that fast.
All that said, you gotta pay if you want a decent newsgroup server. Some isps have free ones, but they all suck and a half from what I've seen. If you want a referral code btw let me know

Powerusenet has a $10/month for the first 2 months promotion $15 after that.
They've been pretty good so far. I've used: Giganews (too expensive) Newshosting (retention sucks at 45days) and Powerusenet (good promotion, good retention, 105days) |

I don't know where the 1 person in this thread gets that newgroups are more " safer from legality " then torrents are .... but they oviously didn't read what I did a few days ago on 1 of the tech sites news sections reguarding the riaa starting to build up cases to go after newsgroups.
