Hi, after having received a false positive from Webroot Spysweeper, that stated I had a nasty Dlpinch trojan horse, (Webroot has stated today that it is a FP, due to a Windows Messenger update, etc., and is harmless.) In any event, it was a scare, and it got me thinking about my AV system... what is a better AV system to have, in your opinion, between Avg and NOD32? I've been very pleased with AVG, but have heard many good things about NOD32. I can google this, and I did, but I want to know what RFD'ers think! I trust you guys!
My son downloads lots of game trainers, game mods, etc., (Star Wars, etc.) and he is great at running the A/V scans on them prior to using them, but in any event, I would like to know which A/V is best to use in our situation. |

I have used AVG for 5+ years on my computer and client computers. For a free program its Very good. I have also tried avast which was good but I think it used up more system resources then AVG.
Either one you go for should be good but I prefer AVG myself.

I've used both and personally, I'd much prefer NOD32. It's an effective non-invasive little anti-virus that does the job quite well. Full system scans are pretty quick and you're pretty much set for use after installing with little to no user intervention required. AVG is alright too. I find it gets a little annoying at times like with updates and complete system scans going off randomly. It adds to the boot time a bit, at least in my experience. I guess you can't really go wrong with either but my vote's for NOD32. Been using it for a year now and I haven't looked back.

WHen you first install it, you have the option for it not to scan randomly. Thats soemthing you have to look for so its not AVG's problem its the user.

NOD32 is the best AV I've used, with smallest footprint and resources usage.
I've used AVGFree, its not bad. The email scanner is annoying since you can't turn off the tagline "scanned by avg" garbage. its not resource intensive either, but its takes a bit more then NOD32. AVAST on the other hand, completely slowed down my system, I ended up having to uninstall it.

I do understand that most people prefer NOD32 like me due to it's small footprint and not being a resource hog.
Well I have used it for quite sometime until recently when I changed over. My computer was infected with a whole lot of virus & Trojans and the NOD32 didn't even blink. The McAfee I later installed detected ALL the infections and cleaned every one of them. Viruses were coming in the spam mails and NOD32 would not detect it all (while McAfee would instantly detect the threat) I have also used AVG and AVG had more success in detecting these viruses. So all NOD32 users out there, I would recomend you to use a different virus scanner and run a scan on your PC's out there (just to be sure you are clean). Free Online scanners froM TrendMicro are easy to use and don't need to be installed on your PC too.... YOu will be in for a surprise!!! |

On my Media Center (2005) I have NOD32 and everytime I log on it checks for the latest signatures so the systems sits and waits to obtain before proceeding. This can last as long as 30-45secs. The MCE is using a wireless connection so I'm not sure if that is what causes it as my other system which is on a wired network connection does not have the issue.
