Question Credit Reports

Has anyone here ever gotten their credit reports from either Equifax or TransUnion Canada? Did you guys do it online or snail mail? And did you find any mistakes in your report?

I've done it a few times.

Fortunately, never found any problems. There's LOTS of good information.

I've requested on-line when they've had promotions. Otherwise, I do the old snail mail route as that is 100% free for your basic credit report.

The 'extras' they like to charge you for are interesting, but aren't necessarily of added value. The only really good piece of data I don't think you can get for free is your credit score (same as FICO score in the US).

If you've never gotten reports in the past, I'd start with the good old snail-mail freebies. Make sure there's no erroneous information and everything looks in order. Once you know the data they have is accurate, then order the 'bells and whistles' reports to see how your overall rating looks.

Thanks for the links. I hope they will send me a 'good' report. I always wonder what my credit rating is.

I've checked mine online when they had that Mastercard promotion. I'm quite happy with my score even though I'm still a univ student.

Bottom line is that you need to get a copy of BOTH reports from Equifax and Transunion because you don't know who is using which to check against you.

If you happen to live in a city where Equifax and/or TransUnion have an office, you can go there directly and view your credit report for free.

You just need to send them a photocopy (of both sides) of your ID.

How often are you allowed to request for your credit report?

I think as often as you wish.. but it is a bit of a chore to do.. so usually people will only request it every 6months-1yr (though, that's still a lot more often than the regular person ever checks - ie. NEVER).

Edit: Also.. you checking your own credit report doesn't affect your score.. but take note, having other organizations checking your credit DOES hurt your rating. So only apply for things, or let people check it when its necessary, and if you feel you will get whatever you are trying to get.
