Thumped by a truckTough Oiler Matt Greene took his hardest hit ever Saturday night
By ROBIN BROWNLEE, EDMONTON SUN
Matt Greene is fine, but the SUV that clipped the Edmonton Oilers rookie on Calgary Trail Saturday when its driver lost control didn't fair nearly as well. It's a writeoff.
There's a punch line in their somewhere - Greene hits like a truck, but this is the first time he's been hit by a truck - but the burly blue-liner was back on the ice with his teammates at Rexall Place yesterday and shrugged off a potentially very serious incident.
"The car got totalled," smiled Greene, who fared considerably better than the Jeep Cherokee that mowed him down. "It's fine. I'm OK. The police are looking into it. I'm not worried about it."
Greene, 22, was on his way home and talking with friends outside of a nightclub at about 12:30 a.m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck Greene, who saw the SUV coming at him and was able to brace for the impact.
The six-foot-three, 223-pound native of Grand Ledge, Michigan, bounced off the hood and windshield of the SUV and hit the pavement. He was taken to University hospital with bumps and bruises and later released.
"I was on the sidewalk talking to a friend," Greene said. "I heard some tires squealing, I turned back around and the car fishtailed right into me. It was an accident.
"It was dead-centre in the grill and the hood ... I just kind of turned and took the hit."
As a precaution, Greene spent about five hours in a neck brace Saturday night. He missed practice Sunday but took a twirl yesterday before leaving the workout early.
"That's the hardest hit I've taken in awhile," deadpanned Greene, who expects to be ready to play against the St. Louis Blues tomorrow. "I'm sore. My lower body is sore. I got hit by a truck.
"There's nothing you can do about it. It's kind of unfortunate. I was kind of at the wrong place at the wrong time, I guess."

The funniest line in this story is
"It was dead-centre in the grill and the hood ... I just kind of turned and took the hit."
Took the hit!!

Damn, any normal human would be lying in the hospital with a concussion and a body of broken bones.
