Great steaks are not cheap steaks.
Oh sure u can get flank steaks for a deal, but if u want awesome steaks.....\\ Go to Costco. Buy a whole ribeye. Ask any butcher, they'll tell u this is the most consistantly tasty steak. Filet mignon is devoid of fat, so thats why they wrap bacon around it, otherwise it would be a very dry lean puck of meat. Why buy a whole one? Well Costo (and Loblaws and Sobeys) charge about $5/kg to cut steak, put on a styrofoam tray and cover with clear wrap. You own a knife don't you? Got some freezer bags? IF you buy a 5KG piece of meat, u save about $25+tax. (5kg= 11lb or 22 8oz steaks) Now cut steaks in 1.5 - 2.5" slices. Don't worry about the fat, its going to give your steak flavour and u can cut it out later. Put the extra steaks in a freezer bag and suck all the air out with a straw. Now u have steak for the season! Thats the best deal I know of, I've tried buying lower cuts of beef, on sale. For me, its just not worth it.

Actually, I don't know if anyone is aware, thanks to mad cow, the wholesale price for a young bull is approx $.40-50 per pound. That is if you buy the whole animal. Add another $200 to have it slaughter, clean and age. It works out to about $1-1.50/lb of meat.
So For about $700, I think you'll have more than enough meat that will last a family for a year. What I'm planning to do is find 3 other family to share the animal with me this coming Victoria Day when there's an auction. Cuz I know I eat alot, but I don't think I can eat the entire Cow between me and my wife. So if any RFDer in Ottawa is interested in getting some beef, let me know. |
