I like Asus and IBM/Lenovo, but I usually buy a Dell for the price.

I treat it as an expendable investment, instead of one that'll last me for 10+ years.

I know IBM is the best, but I prefer Toshiba, I think its building quality is close to IBM, but with a much lower price tag. I have 3 Toshiba Notebooks with me now, one Tecra, two Satellite, Only complain is the Fuji HDD in Satellite A100-SK9 always giving rattling tickle sound, I checked Fuji HDD website, it says it's normal, but sometime it really gets annoying. The other two Toshiba are equipped with Hitachi HDD and no such sound.

I am also curious why you omitted Apple notebooks.

My first notebook was a Fujitsu Lifebook which was great (the experience). Build quality started to wither away after a year with discoloring of the palm area but much like Apple, it held its resale value. HP/Compaq are pretty on par with Fujitsu. Right now I have a MacbookPro and couldn't be happier. It's one slick notebook.

Because I'm not in the market for Apple but thanks for your suggestions.

Dell Business line... Latitude or Precision.

You pay more.. but the build quality is excellent and the support is amazing.

I've got an apple, and for the opposite reason.

iBook G4 1ghz, running 10.4. Battery died but its almost 3 years old so its all good :-)

Runs circles around my classmates pee-cee laptops in day to day usefulness. My battery lasts long enough to get some work done

Ditto.
Just to clarify, personally, I dislike laptops.
But,
Have to decide/order laptops for others.

Cons:
Just a heads up,
Dell is improving somewhat but don't be surprised for 45+ minutes telephone time to resolve an issue that they cause.
eg. Wrong configuration of laptop, defective laptop ...

As for Alienware,
They were bought out by Dell last? year.

Thumbs down

I have a MacBook Pro, why you didn't add Apple is beyond me, they are starting to get mainstream, alot of parents are getting their kids Mac Laptops which can run both Mac and Windows to bring to school.

In terms of IBM, didn't they sold their PC Business? Should have named it Lenovo instead.

This poll is kinda flawed...
