Default Just another Valentine's day story

Okay, time to dust off the old memory book and recollect the best Valentine's day for me.

My best Valentine's day actually started in 1998. I was in first year university and just started dating a girl I knew from highschool. I couldn't afford anything as I was a full time student on OSAP with no income. So I convinced my girlfriend at the time that we should exchange letters to eachother for Valentine's day and not open it until 5 years down the road, Valentine's day 2003. She thought it was a sweet idea, fortunately for me. So we exchanged our letters, taped it on our walls and that was pretty much it that year.

Five years passed and somehow we were still together. Things weren't exactly perfect between the two of us as I was trying to focus on my career and she was getting restless, dating the same guy for 5 years with no indication from me of any 'future' together. I wasn't letting her talk about marriage with me. Arguments were frequent and many threats of breaking up were thrown in my direction. I bit my tongue and took it all in.

I was just starting my first low paying job and still broke, paying back my OSAP loans (damn OSAP!!!). Valentine's day quickly approached and I again suggested a cheap night of just opening our old letters. She wasn't totally into being cheap anymore but went along with it reluctantly, probably thinking she would break up with me soon anyway. We were over at my place and I opened her letter first. I don't remember what she wrote.

It was now her turn. She opened my letter and started reading. Slowly her eyes began to water and when she finished reading, she looked up at me and quietly said "Yes".

So that's my story.

Readers Digest Summary:
I proposed to my girlfriend in 2003 through an exchanged letter back in 1998. Couldn't afford a ring but that doesn't matter anymore. We've been happily married since 2004 and have just welcomed our first son this year.

p.s. I'm a sap.
p.p.s. I was inspired by the movie "My Sassy Girl". Can you tell

edit: turns out I may have inspired the movie instead

thanks

That's an interesting question. Of course when I wrote the letter, I wasn't 100% sure if I would still be with her in the future, let alone end up marrying her. I basically figured if we were still dating after 5 years, then I probably would want to marry her. It was a huge risk on my part but one I was willing to make. Plus, if we weren't dating after 5 years then who would care what I wrote in that letter?

btw, we still have the original letters in a scrapbook I made for our 1st anniversary.

You're quite the risk taker, aren't you?
Did you remember that you wrote that in the letter?

Thanks MJM. It was an awesome movie. I can't believe they're doing an American remake. Hope it's not lame.

I'm just wondering how you were inspired by the movie "My Sassy Girl" when you did this in 1998 and the movie only came out in 2001

Good point Aznsilvrboy. Maybe the story is actually about me? I could be the one who wrote it.

I guess I couldn't have been inspired by it. That movie was still fresh in my mind when I proposed and when I told all my friends, they all compared it with the movie. I probably just fooled myself into thinking I was inspired by the movie.

That makes my story even better now, doesn't it?
