Great news everyone! The Devteam has debuted an official SOFTWARE unlocked for the Apple iPhone 3G (the app is called yellowsn0w). Before all of you go crazy, the application is not out yet; however, there has been a live demo of an unlocked 3g iPhone. Here's the link (enjoy!):

most people who wanted a iphone already got it from a service provider that they gonna go through 2-3 year contract with. having a iphone 3g unlock is a really moot point atm.

How is it even moot? What if I wanted to go to Asia and use my iPhone? Without the unlock, I would not be able to do that. Likewise, let's say I plan on going to the States for work after I graduate and I wanted to keep my iPhone? With an s/w unlock, I could just go down to the US and buy a SIM card and not have to worry about which service provider will try and get me to sign a contract for a phone. Furthermore, having an unlock gives me the ability to switch b/w carriers etc...
Or maybe you could be a phone-lover, like myself, and have multiple phones (E71, iPhone, and Sony G705). With an unlock program, I can easily switch between my phones depending on my needs and requirements (e.g. I'll use my E71 for texting, iPhone for watching tv shows on the bus or use it when excercising, and I can use the G705 as a camera phone etc...) You do know that some people can afford to have more than 1 phone, right? Btw, I bought the iPhone when I was with Fido, but now I'm signed-up with Rogers, so I couldn't use the 3G iPhone because of the "lock"

lets be honest here, the number one reason for unlocking phones is not for use in other countries, its for selling them to people/places where it is not readily available depending on carrier restriction/financial means. the point you made about going to states to work is significant in cases of other phones, not so much in the iphone. As we all now, iphone is most likely be updated before most people's contracts finish, which translates into you wanting a new iphone before you keep it and take it to the states. And if you really wanted to take it to the states before you contract is up and the new iphone comes, you're potentially looking at $400 termination fees, which outweighs any benefits of having an iphone unlocked for use in the states. granted a software unlock of iphone for free does have its uses, but its not quite like when people published the unlocking/jailbreaking of the iphone 2g. I'm just putting your news in perspective against the unlocking of the iphone 2g.
and as for your problem about switching carrier, shoulda thought of that before you got your rogers iphone.
