Default Import question

I'm pending import something from china, using UPs for the shipping method, i know I need to pay the tax on it, I also know UPS will charge the custom fee or service fee that very expensive, do anyone know I can reduce those expensive service fee? or any broker can do and reduce the cost?

Hi
First of all UPS is a ripoff, I understand people only use them for their great service and tracking, but man the fees are insanly high. To answer your question they will not let you reduce the fees. For example if you buy something from ebay at 10 dollars and they open and value your item at 100, you are paying the 100 dollar value, take it or leave it. Make sure there is an invoice specifically stating the cost, quantity, etc. As for reducing their bokerage fees, there is only one way to do so, and that is to hire a broker for yourself. I do not recommend this if this is a one time shipment. However, if you do ship a lot of stuff then your own broker will reduce those fees. They usually charge a yearly fee based on your import totals.

Best thing to do is try to get your importer to ship some other method, that will save you the most money.
G-luck

UPS is a rip-off! Take a look at FedEx or as the other post suggests, a Customs Broker.

Things you should know....harmonization code for the item(s) you are importing. This will determine the duty rate, if any, for the stuff you import. Payment - if you can get it all done in one shot it would be easier/cheaper for you. Import from China is probably a letter of credit or draft (US$) - this costs a lot. If you have to pay your broker, negotiate to pay in Cdn$ by credit card if possible.
