Default hire two or three movers?

Hi,

I'm moving and want to know if it is more efficient and ends up costing less if I hire three men, not two. My husband and my brother in law will be there too so there will be 5 men.

Need more details, as can result in different results.

Whats getting moved ( whole house to another )
Distance between old and new place
There rental vehicle or yours ( uhauls, 1/2 tonness , etc. )
Timeframe of move ( 1,2,3 days)

P.S. rather than hire always easier to get some freinds and have all free drinks and dinner ( bbq) or go out to retaurant afterwards and pay for vehicle usage if needed ( trucks ), even order a few pizza's in between move. And don;t forget to invite spouse(kid)s if doing a meal even if they didn't help it just makes the move and meal justify the free labour

Unfortunately we don't have close enough friends to ask for help. So my husband tells me to hire movers with a truck. It is $90/hour for two men, and $115 for 3. It seems like 3 men is a better deal.

But we are moving from a two bedroom apt to another two bedroom apartment. We have quite a bit of stuff for apartment dwellers. I have a piano to sell, and need to move it outside the building so that the buyer will take it.
I also have a storage full of stuff....
Distance is very close - 1-2Km?
We will be trying to move a lot of stuff in garbage bags in our cars the day before.

I moved from a two bed condo and had three movers. It was a great decision...but you have five people so maybe two is good for you

don't most moving companies figure this stuff out for you btw? ie: they will decide how many movers are required to do the job you give them?

Really? That's like asking your mechanic if there's anything wrong in the car and you want to get it fixed by all means.

that's a ridiculous idea!! why would you want to inconvinient friends? as if they have nothing else better to do than help someone move, that's a BIG job and its better left for movers who need the money!! Not many people have a wide pool of friends who they can rely on to help move.

Hi,

I moved last year and this is from my experience.

Do not hire movers by the hour, hire them for the # of bedrooms that you are moving.

If you hire them by the hour they will take all day to move you.

I hired mine by the hour, it took them 8 hours to move a 2 bedroom apt into a 1 bed apt.

They never filled up the elavator full before taking it down or up.

Yes it might cost a little more, but it wont last all day.

Also make sure that they dont charge you for the time it takes them to get to your place from their home.

And get all the details on paper, seriously.

If you're paying them cash DO NOT TIP, they are getting this money tax free.

I never heard about movers charing for # of bedrooms. I called three places and they all charge by hour. That's ridiculous - 8 hours!
Do you have tips for me not to have this kind of situation where they purposely take time? Thanks so much.

You mean there are too many people in a small place, tripping over one another?

If you ask friends to help don't involve alcohol during the move other wise you're just asking for a long day.

which I don't see a huge problem with....long as they keep you in the loop and explain what and why they are doing something...

I mean professional movers are just that...professional...and much better at it than either you or I or anyone else who doesn't move 100 people a week... I'd compare it to a professional painter...and he shows up to do his job and you've asked your 15 year old nephew to help him out...I'd just consider it rude...
