During course selection, my math teacher advised that "Function and Relations" is a REALLY REALLY hard class. People less than 95 need not apply ... can anyone confirm? He told us stories about how classes cut down to 15 students by middle of the year due to drop-outs. Also, class averages become <60.
Can anyone confirm.... ![]() edit: what was your mark in gr10 if you took the class? Last edited by wanted; Aug 16th, 2005 at 11:51 AM.. |

The only difference is FandR has one additional unit, i think it's called conex or something.
Anyway, just wait til you get to gr 12...that's where the real hard stuff comes

I took functions and relations and it was the easiest and funnest math course that I ever took. I also got my highest math mark in that course. At times it can be very challenging but its preparing you for Advanced Functions and an Intro. to Calculus
EDIT: Conics are really really easy |

i would say 95 is a bit to steep but 75-80 is more realistic out of a class of 22 we had 18 people after dropouts i had.. 75 in grade nine 90 in grade ten 91 in grade 11 85 in grade 12 calc btw i am going into grade 12 now do ur work and ur going to be fine and conics is very easy and a waste of time |

The course material itself is not difficult, its just that you have to stay on top of your homework. I think a lot of people do poorly or drop out is because they underestimate the transition from Academic to University Prep classes. Teachers stop checking if you do your homework everyday, leaving you to be responsible for it, and they dont give out as many quizzes and other things that inflate marks. Mixed classes are pretty much like the Academic classes from grade 9 and 10, where theres more babying by the teacher.

94 Gr 11 Enriched (MCR3U3 I think it was).
83 Gr 12 AP Calc 80+ Gr12 Algebra and Geometry (can't rem exactly my mark, doesn't really matter). Point is math courses from high-school are a pure joke in Canada, and they're not even taught properly, from what I've seen, experienced and heard. In some Eastern European countries' Gr 11 math they do what is taught at U of T in MAT157 and 240, all in a year. Funny part is everyone gets it, and almost nobody fails (2-3 students out of 25-30). For non UofT students, those are two of the hardest math courses that you can take in your first year.

consider most of the people on RFD are asians, i guess thats why it seems so easy for us. It's true many people had difficulties with it but our class average was over 70. I guess it's possible for ur school's average to be less than 60 if everyone is not so bright
