Default The Food on Campus Topic

Just thought it'd be neat for people to share their best/worst experiences and give out tips for inexpensive and palatable meals on or around campus. Feel free to point out some good bars.

EDIT: This discussion isn't limited to any one university, so people from other universities, feel free to chime in with stuff related to your campus!

U of T St. George

Pho Hung (Bloor and Avenue): Average meal will put you back about $5, the place is clean (frequented by a lot of snobby Bloor St. businesspeople) and the food isn't bad. 10% student discount with student card. Almost always packed at lunch time.

The cheapest sausages on campus: Two years running... the blue tented hot dog vendor in front of Robart's. $2.25 for Italian/German sausages, later became $2.50. Still cheaper than the $3 or higher you'll find around Sid Smith, but the portions are also smaller. Not bad for a light snack.

My choice of Chinese food truck: The white truck just south of Harbord and St. George. Costs about the same as the red truck in front of Robart's, but I find the meals taste better here. The white truck also looks much cleaner from the outside. Feel free to comment on this one.

White truck has alot of variety but the red truck in front of Robarts has amazing beef and scrambled egg on rice. The way they cook the eggs is amazing, so silky and goes so well with the brown sauce they have.

The hot dog stand by Robarts is certainly the cheapest I've come across with many choices of toppings. However, I prefer the one on College/St. George as Frankie the Hot Dog vendor is the only one that I know that also has sauteed onions.

Cora's and Papa Ceo's pizza located on Harbord and Spadina have excellent pizza slices. My favourite would be the Spinach and cheese.

Sushi on Bloor is the top sushi restaurant that I've been to that's within walking distance from U of T. Excellent prices, huge portions, and above-average quality makes this place a winner. New Generation follows a distant second.

Finally, New Ho King is a very good Chinese restaurant for takeout and delivery. For dine-in, there's this restaurant with a Green Sign but I forgot the name.

University of Waterloo

University Plaza (University and Philip)

J.B's Mongolian Grill: if you're in first year, you'll either go with your floor, or check it out one day with your friends, it's a great place, good food, a little expensive if you go for the all you can eat meal, but reasonable for a single lunchtime bowl, especially if pack it tight

Campus Pizza: You love it and hate it at the same time, good pizza, open really late (Great for those nights when stumbling home drunk!), decent price, and they accept WatCard which is a bonus.

Phat Cat's: Simply incredible, the best Gyros and Falafel's you can get around there, very tasty and for two Gyro's it's only $5, can't be beat!

McGuiness: Front Row: Your usual sports bar, usually have some good specials on burgers, or wings, or pints.

Chill and Grill: Well it's called something else now, like The Grill or something because of lawsuit with Dairy Queen, but it's a good place for milkshakes, ice cream, and some really tasty burgers. Kind of on the expensive side though.

Mel's Diner: Your typical 50's style diner, it's got some pretty good breakfasts, and it also open real late.

Mikey's Eatery: While the whole Canadian and Asian food might throw you off, it's really tasty and pretty cheap for the combo's and they're REALLY filling!

There's lots of other stores in the plaza, those are usually the key ones though.

Other than that I highly recommnd the Engineering C&D Shop, a great place for cheap food and cheap coffee, usually you can get an entire lunch for well under $5!

University of BC

FOOD HERE SUCKS!! BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH!!

If you must eat on campus, fast food in the Village and Subway is probably the only places that are edible.

Food on campus....
I still drive down to UT sometimes just to have the sausage with all fixens on a bun.. hmm did that come out right?
BTW whenever we had nough time we always walked to China town to have the cheapest and possibly best deals in town. Try HongKong Restaurant a second floor restaurant on Dundas just East of Spadina.... I hope it's still there

You mean I could have got 10% off my $5 meal for all these years?!?!?!? Why didn't I know about this.

LOL

P.S. Pho really is delicious. Canadian living has featured them a few times
