Finalized Vancouver Bus Route Changes Post Canada Line (Sept 7)

There were some people interested in what the final bus route changes would be once the Canada Line was up and running. Transit Link just emailed me this (proactively I might add after corresponding with them a couple of weeks ago)

That was going to have to happen. Translink promised the private company that is going to run the new line a certain number of passengers, or Translink owes them money.

So they are going to be trying to funnel as many passengers are possible to the new line.

The new skytrain line is a P3 (Public Private Partnership).

I may have the details a bit fuzzy, buy basically, it was built by a private company. The government put up a certain amount of money and if there were cost overruns, the company was to pay the rest. When it's built, the company will run and maintain it for the next x years (35 years I think).

I'm not entirely certain how it works employee wise. It may be the maintenance workers are employed by the company, and other workers such as the Transit cops are still paid by Translink. Or something like that.


The private company get a share of each fare. But the government still sets the fares. The private company has been promised a certain number of passengers (or maybe it was a certain amount of money) each year. If they don't get it, the government has to top them up.

So the government has an incentive to make sure at least the minimum number of passengers are funnelled toward the new line.

I didn't read the link, but is there going to be some kind of bus running along Burrard or was it Granville - the street that 98-B line used to run on ?

they should run b-line from new-west or Burnaby to Richmond.

Yes, the non-express bus that has always run down Granville will continue to run down Granville. There just won't be an express bus running down Granville.

Edit: just noticed that the $2.50 surcharge to/from the airport won't take effect until 2010. My bet is starting February 1 to catch all the Olympic passengers.

That's actually a much cheaper surcharge than I expected.

In Sydney, Australia the surchage is about $9 Australian. I was actually expecting it to be somewhere in that area.

They just announced the Canada Line will be opening on Monday, August 17th.

It will just be open from 1pm-9pm for free rides on that day.


The next day it will begin it's regular schedule with regular fares. Although the $2.50 extra surcharge for the airport won't begin until 2010.

there already are 4 relatively fast town routes for that

100 takes marine drive 22nd street station to airport
301 takes hwy 91 from surrey to richmond center
410 takes hwy 91 from 22nd street station to richmond center
430 is an express from metro town to richmond center

and guess what, except for 410, those busses are rarely full
