Lightbulb Fever, Cough & Cold Remedies

Aiight., folks...drop your herbal remedies (For Children (Thanks Gorf.,I forgot to specify ), as well as your mainstream tried and true treatments for treating all these good Canadian Fall/Winter/Spring related Signs and Symptoms.

Post them neatly, and I'll collect them and update this as required.

Great words of wisdom folks., keep em coming, and I'll cooooooolllate once there's enough to do it. Thanks a bunch.

honey and enough hot water to melt the honey + carbonated water + lemon slices with skin removed.

The whole idea is drink lots of fluids and flush the bad bugs out.

In a "burner" ( ceramic bowl with the tealite underneath to heat the water above) I add any combination of these essential oils to rid the air of germs. I also have a small bowl of water in their room containing a blend as well.

rosalina-very good for young children, nice smelling
rosemary
tea tree
cedar
juniper berry
palmarosa
fir needle
eucalyptus
myrtle
thyme
marjoram

In my honey/lemon drink, I add fresh ginger slices, it works wonders for me too when I feel a cold coming on.

I give them a multivitamin daily that has EVERYTHING in it. "Progressive for Kids" at the health food store (I go to Hoopers). Plus I give extra Vit C. during the winter.

I have noticed this year the sickness has gone down significantly and shortened in duration.

Take a lot of water/liquid(I mean A LOT) and have good rest(skip a day or 2 of work so you don't spread the germs)always work for me, I never visit my family doctor for that. Most symtoms should be gone in a couple of days.

Okay, I just saw Golden Seal up there and you wouldn't give that to kids, or I wouldn't.

We used a humidifier, multiple vitamins (Polyvisol I think,) chicken noodle soup, pure juices for vitamin C, Tempra for fever, Tylenol for older kids, childrens cough syrup (Triaminic) if we went to the doctor and he said so. Lots of hugs and cuddles.

I can't remember already, that was so long ago.

I guess another thing is if the child has a sore throat, they're not going to want to eat, so jello and soups are good, simple type foods. Also if they have a stomach flu along with the cold, lay off the milk, it'll just go right through them. Bathing in tepid water can also help bring a fever down.

I can also remember the doctor saying, "if the babies temperature goes above 39.5, call me." The doctor was always on call, or someone from the office was.

My advice? When buying over-the-counter cold&flu remedies READ THE LABEL. The basic active ingredients you'll find in cough & cold are:
acetaminophen = pain & fever
ibuprofen = pain & fever; only available in Advil Cold & Sinus for now
phenyl ephrine = nasal decongestant; popular now due to move away from pseudo-ephedrine
pseudo-ephedrine = nasal decongestant; may make some people wired
dextromethorphan = cough suppressant
guaifenesin = expectorant
chlorpheniramine = antihistamine; supposed to help with sneezing and that annoying post-nasal drip; may also cause drowsiness in some people.

Most of the brands out Tylenol, Benylin, Nyquil, Contac, Triaminic, etc use different combinations of the same active ingredients. One is hardly better than the other if they share the same ingredients & it's possible to overdose if you switch brands without checking ingredients.

Having said that, for fever, runny nose without cough? Advil Cold & Sinus for my kids!

Hope this post makes sense

Be VERY careful when you are using essential oils around children. Certain ones (e.g. eucalyptus) can have extremely horrible results depending on how used and the child. You should consult a homeopath or naturopath before using.

We have been using "Immunokids" (by Sisu) [recommended by our naturopath] since my son started school this past Sept. and was constantly coming home with bugs.

That has helped immensely AND major lessons about proper handwashing... as it is really the best prevention.

Also just as an FYI... saw this on CBC that the FDA is looking into OTC cold and flu stuff for kids...
