Default Eyetoy for Xbox 2?

Quote:
Bloomberg News reports that Microsoft Corp. might offer a camera with the next Xbox that lets players use body movements to control games.

The camera, mounted on a TV to capture a player's gestures, would rival Sony's EyeToy, told J Allard, Chief XNA Architect, to Bloomberg.

We're trying to take some learnings from what our competition has done with cameras that let players control games, said Allard at the Games Developers Conference in San Francisco. We've got a couple of those answers. We're going to turn that into a couple of solutions.

Another possibility could be to allow Xbox 2 owners to attach a digital camera to the console, allowing them to manipulate digital photos. Allard said that might be an “interesting idea.

They're so far behind if they're only thinking of doing this now.
It's amazing, Sony has innovated far more than Xbox and using standard computer peripherals too. Wasn't there the netmeeting camera they announced for Japan but never managed to put out?

Netmeeting/webcam/videophone & camera input through your console was done years ago with the DreamEye, 4 years ahead of Sony.

But wasn't that just with the camera and not using it for an actual game?

Sega didn't have any games made for it because the price was so high, it probably didn't have huge sales, it wasn't going to be sold outside Japan, and was released near the end of the Dreamcast. Sony basically took the idea of games that use video capture, matched it with Sega's device & called the trash eyetoy; not very innovative. Judging history, Sega was/is probably the most innovative console company ever.

I agree about Sega being innovative but I don't think Sony ripped them off. It's a different step putting a videoconference device and making it good enough to actually control things. There's quite a bit of research put into the Eyetoy. Now I KNOW they ripped off Intel regarding this, not really Sega. Intel Play! actually had a bundle pre-Dreamcast that made use of the videocam and used it to control mini-games.
I think Nintendo matched Sega in innovation in the console world:
- 3d platforming using an analog controller - Nintendo
- Virtua Boy - Nintendo
- Game n Watch - Nintendo
- 3d in consoles - Nintendo's starfox
- touch screen gaming in any real sense - Nintendo
- that digital touchpad - Nintendo
- online gaming using the Compuserve network in the late 80's - Nintendo
and soon whatever Revolution has in store
Which is why I was never a big fan of $ony. They haven't really innovated much (eyetoy is probably the closest thing they've introduced that's somewhat innovative).
