Default Enjoying University Life

I'll be going into my first year of university in September and i just wanted to ask others what kind of activities and things they do/did to really enjoy university life...it doesnt have to be only things to do with the university such as sports etc. but also nightlife. Really interested to hear what other people have done!

depends on which university you are going to and whether you are 19 yet.
gotta fill us in on that before we can give advice

I'm a 3rd year electrical engineering (term 3B), Here's what I learned.

- Don't go home too often, meet a lot of people
- Get into clubs and activities that make you completely forget about school
- Night clubs aren't that great but good every once in a while.
- Don't have a girlfriend through first year.
- First year is easy in every faculty. Don't make the mistake of thinking school is essential to life. Drink in the middle of the week if your friends are and learn when it's a good time to say, "screw it... stress isn't worth it"

Thats a quick run down. I spent first year going home a lot to a girlfriend from high school. From my experience, just have fun or else you'll regret stressing about stuff that means so little in the big picture.

It's not so much that i want advice, just want to know what others have done...maybe even specifics like what uni you go too and what are the places to check out around there...then it can help others who are going to that same uni.

- work hard but play harder.
- like someone said, dont get tied down with a gf first year unless she's worth it
- if u dont need to go home, don't, do it every couple weeks
- depends on the school but there is hess village around mcmaster for example..that was always fun
- network, network, network!! make as many friends as u can, u never know who the next ceo will be that might be able to get you that job....n ull always no wher the parties at

what school are you goin to and are u 19 or have a fake id?

I'd have to agree networking is very important. Once you know that guy who knows some one who can get you a job, or that next assignment you don't have time for, you're golden. This also includes elder students who can give you texts for cheap and old work. If I'm strapped for time (engineering...), I know at least 10 people who have it done or know where to get it done. I don't encourage blatant copying, but let's face it, **** happens. Do midterms and finals as your own and you've proven what's important.

As for fun, I go to the University of Victoria. When in first year, we found ourselves bored a lot in residence, so we'd find really weird stuff to do like:

- If you ever get to live in on campus townhouses, hold a "Jungle fever" party. Since you dont pay for heat or water, crank the thermostat to max and turn on all showers on hot. Leave bathroom doors open, close all windows and outside doors.
- Have campus wildlife as a residence pet (squirrels, rabbits, etc)
- Make political and social comments by posting graffiti stencils everywhere
- Get a paintball gun and do dangerous things with it because no one besides one persion has the proper gear
- Play in door baseball in residence with cafeteria trays as a bat and a tennis ball
- get a bike. They are suddenly cool and practical in university
- Start a project. Anything. If you suddenly feel the urge to find out some way to steal internet or cable tv and have it in your room... do it. Take apart electronics and rearrange your room for the most space or craziest setup.
-Use permanent marker on door whiteboards with obscene comments
-Play video games and bring the really addicting console games
- get into pranks, but don't go "badly" illegal or "very" dangerous.

This comes from personal experience. In first and second year I maintained a B+/A- average in electrical engineering. Just have fun.

I joined a first year's only program at my uni. We went to watch the raptors, go to yuk yuk's, played dodgeball, had our own amazing race.

I also did some intramurals, I went the Athletic Centre mainly for swimming, pick up bball, and table tennis.

I joined an Anime Club (didn't attend all the time, but watched anime from time to time).

Did a little bit of volunteering ( joined a group through my mentor (a 5th year)). We basically volunteered for the 50/50 Draw at the Raptors game, and donated the money, we walked around downtown feeding the homeless.

it's really important you find out how you study best first year. once you have this figured out, you'll have plenty of time to do whatever you want while at the same time getting better marks than just about everyone.

for example, i found out that i absorb certain materials (3 out of my 5 courses actually) better by teaching myself via textbook at the library rather than going to class. so i applied this and go to the library after breakfast to study until lunch and then a few hours after that. on most days i would have the rest of the day off and i would have covered more material than the prof did in class.

my free time... i spent just hanging out, playing card games, playing basketball or badminton, going to the gym, playing in the snow during winter, etc. i don't know your age but if you're 19... well you should have no problems doing stuff going places.

another advice, DO NOT bring video games to rez (especially addicting ones) if you think you might play more than 5-10 hours a week. i played WoW first semester and it really screwed up my schedule, marks, and social life. same thing happened another friend who brought his xbox to rez. thank god i rebounded 2nd semester... but hey playing super smash bros on an N64 once in a while is different though .

Hahahaha I forgot about WoW. Yeah, don't bring that... It will ruin you. I moreso meant an addicting game you play with others on a console, like halo or retro like goldeneye.

University of Waterloo:

People say that it's dull, but if you are an outgoing person, it won't be dull for you. All you have to do is go out.

Stuff to do in first year:

- Live in residence - for the most experience
- Frosh week, must go, fun, meet lots of people, make new friends
- Join school clubs, there will be clubs days for you to check out club booths in the student life centre
- Wednesday and Saturday nights: Go to school pub called the Bomber
- All other days, there are cheap drinks, cheap wings and other special events going on at various local locations on different nights
- Consider rushing (joining) a fraternity or sorority, they usually host some nice free events at the beginning of the term, see if you like the people, the concept and the values
- Be active, join intramural sports, take fitness courses, etc. all available on campus
- Don't forget to study at least a little bit
