Cufflinks without jacket?

What's protocol? Can you wear cuff links without a jacket? Or is it "proper form" to only wear them with a jacket?

The traditional "rule" is that cufflinks are for wearing with a full suit & tie. But it's becoming increasingly common to wear them with or without jacket. Although...silk knots are better than metal links when worn without jacket.

trusoulja2g is right. They should only be worn with a suit/tie. However with non-descript shirt-colored silk knots one could pull it off.

I am in for cufflinks without coat or suit.

In general, to make popular the wearing of cufflinks, we should make people to be more aware of what we are wearing actually enhance our appearance.

who cares you can wear what you want you really don't have to listen to anyone as long as you are comfortable with what you wear...i've seen it without suits and really do you look at his cuff links and say hey you are supposed to wear that with a suit....usually if you say that to some guy he'll just bark an insult back so what does it matter

Then why doesn't everybody wear sweatpants and an undershirt all day?

If you wore cufflinks without a suit jacket to meet your high-level-executive boss in a large financial company, your boss will take notice at this... oddity. Because of this, next time he is looking to promote someone as a Junior VP who will meet with many important clients, he will not consider you because he is afraid you will do this again in front of the important clients from all sorts of backgrounds and sartorial beliefs, and then they will automatically assume you are incompetent because you don't know to not wear cufflinks without a suit jacket.

Thanks for all the advice. What sonick said is exactly the type of thing I'd like to avoid, not that I work for a large company but the analogy fits for lots of other companies and situations.

man you believe this guy ...that ur boss cares so much for your cuff links..u won't get a promo that's like saying u wear white socks with black shoes one day by accident he's not going to look back on it and say u can't get a promo because of this...ridiculous...although yes appearance is judge...usually fashion sense isn't...you might as well include the fact that if you are bald or overweight your boss won't give you a promotion because you are ugly and clients won't like the fact that you sweat so much cuz ur fat

And honestly Rocketo, this is the Fashion and Apparel forum, what the hell do you expect? If everybody followed your "comfortable with what you wear," this forum would be deemed unneccessary.

Sure you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Some people feel entirely comfortable dressing like a slob. Others feel comfortable knowing that they are putting their best appearance forward and are wearing everything properly with style.

Retail price cufflinks are ridiculously overpriced. These things sell in China for $5/pair or less.

I'd wear cufflinks anytime with a jacket. Silk knots pretty much whenever. But the cufflinks/knots should always be simple design, not wild or tacky. They should be just fasteners for your cuffs, not obvious jewelry or bling bling.

sorry but appearances do count when you're working in a corporate environment, more so if you're customer facing. people do take notice when you're dressed well, versus a mismatched slob.

and while you may still get a promotion, clients are probably more likely to respond better to someone who looks good versus someone who doesn't. no this is not a fact, just my own opinion (though i'm pretty sure there was a study done that can attest to this).

you could take the same argument and say why does speeling and gramar kount. if ppl kan r3ad wat your righting why shuld it m@tter?

my silk knots came with the shirt from brooks brother. they have many colors and not expensive if you buy them from an outlet.

My question is about wearing the proper clothes with the proper accessories at the proper time. Would you wear sandals and a baseball cap with a tux to the opera or to a black tie formal wedding? From the sounds of it, you would (which is definitely your right) but you would probably get weird looks and, if it is a wedding, you would probably insult your hosts. Cuff links are like sandals or a hat, there's a proper time to wear them and to not wear them. My question was to clarify when cuff links are appropriate.

Anyone can wear anything they want whenever they want. The clothes you choose make a statement about who you are, not only in a corporate environment but everywhere, and to say appearance is not judged is nonsense. Consciously or unconsciously, you wear what you wear to influence other peoples' judgements. Other people will always react and initially judge you by your fashion style, it's just a fact of life.
