I suggest double checking your municipal by-law before setting one of these up in your back yard.

$50,000 / 1 year in jail... hardcore.

Hardly a great deal if you're not allowed to use it in your backyard.

Nothing wrong with what the second poster wrote, wasn't rude or anything - it truly is a good idea to bring this to people's attention, such that they don't waste their money on something they can't use where they'd like. Not to mention, if somebody was caught using this, it carries quite the hefty fine, would you like to pay that? I personally am a resident of Pickering, and knew nothing of this by-law, and was pretty interested in one of these for the summer nights.

Thanks OP for the post, thanks discoblues for the warning, thanks tilley for the immaturity.

at least in pickering they allow for open air burning appliances (gas operated pits)

in markham, by-law prevents this as well

How is that a troll? I was thinking whether it is legal or not to have that fire pit too. That might be why it's on sale - they had a hard time selling those due to by-laws.

good tip, discoblues. Toronto also seems to prohibit , except for BBQs (i.e. cooking food) or with "written permission" - I'm assuming that's not just a straightforward permit, but I'll look into it - meanwhile, anyone here ever get permission to have one of these firebowls in TO?

Dont listen to these smartasses. They're leaving out 2 very important facts. Theres not a cop in the city that will write that ticket unless one of your neighbours bitches multiple times and thus forces the cop to write it. $50 000 fine and 1 yr. More like $300 and conditional sentence or most likely case dismssed. And thats only if your neighbours hate ya.

Everybody I know uses them in Leaside including my family almost every night and one cop I know of. We have a fire department right around the corner.

Just dont burn leaves or green wood or any other object common sense tells you not to. And dont piss off the neighbours and once in awhile invite them over.

Discoblues was right but he was being a troll. This is Canada still isnt it

Thanks OP - can you please print a copy of your receipt, or someone else who has purchased this, please post?

Thx!

P.S. for anyone else in Calgary, here's the bylaw - looks OK for us to me:

This is the key in Toronto if you are responsible with the pit. If you use 5 gallons on gas on the fire to get it going yea your gonna get shut down. But with a properly built fire and the right safety precausions no cop in TO would ever wanna kill your buzz unless your bring an @$$. And I might be wrong but if you have marshmellows (or another food that can be cooked on the flame), and the mesh covers on I believe it is legal in the GTA. I've actually had my cop buddies over a lot and they haven't said anything about the way we do our fires.

And as for my receipt I didn't actually buy it. But I will try and get a picture tomoro ill be back in the area so ill help you guys out. But you can if in the gta the can call and confirm the price.

We had a fire in a metal drum in Toronto and the neighbours called the fire department. When they came they just asked, "you have some food that you're cooking, right? (nudge, nudge)?" We showed them some chestnuts we were roasting and they said, 'enjoy'. No tickets, no hassle. Its always good to check local bylaws but some municipalities are quite lenient especially where cooking food of any kind is involved. Mind you your fire still has to be contained and under good control and you have to have water close by etc etc

Default in Vaughan ON

Looks like bbq and 'container constructed for incineration purposes according to the specifications of the Fire Code' should be OK. i wonder what these spec are...?

http://www.city.vaughan.on.ca/vaugha.../pdf/50-94.pdf

(e) "Enclosed Fire" means a fire set within the confines of any building, or contained within any
container constructed for incineration purposes according to the specifications of the Fire
Code, and fires built in fireplaces or metal or brick barbecues, for cooking purposes.

Lemme see is I can shed a little light on this....

I live in Alliston ontario and not on a farm in a normal sub division like you would see in mississauga. The town engineer for land and grade by-laws lives right across the street.

He saw me putting one together that I bought last year and walk over and said that yes we do have by-laws that pervent this, as I told him I wanted to get a permit and do it all legal. He said our lots did not have the clearance to get the permits.

He said listen ask your neighbours, if they don't complain the by-law people and the cops would rather you be in, at home then on the streets or the bars..... If no one says nothing then there is no issue...... My neighbours don't care. I went and got those fire logs that you can buy at the grocery store for like 13 bucks for 11 and they make no smoke and friday night and saturday after hockey I always burn one or two and no one says a word....

Be smart don't start a 5 alarm blaze and enjoy!
