Cheap DVDs

Well I'm thinking of starting a movie collection, anyone know of a good cheap way to get DVD's?

2nd hands fine, but dont tell me to go download movies and then burn them on DVD, thats just like telling a stamp collector to go collect photocopies, it kinda defeats the whole purpose.

Try Rogers and Blockbuster for their sale of previously viewed movies.

also try walmart, 2 packs for $11.98, some decent movies available.
Future shop has some movies for 6.99 to 9.99, (9.99 robocop, bulletproof monk, leaving las vegas etc...,)

Pawn shops usually have a collection of used DVDs. Rogers and Blockbuster are good too and the big electronics stores have "cheap sections" in their DVD selection (2/$30, etc). MGM and Sony also have a large selection of cheap titles available.

Just make sure to buy them in their original aspect ratio! This pretty much means widescreen!

Try buying wholesale lots off eBay, but only the ones from private sellers where the titles are actually listed so you know what you're getting. Average price can often work out to only $5-7CAD per including shipping if you buy smart.

Good Advice. Also try smaller local stores, you never know what you'll find. I got Kill Bill Vol. 1 at Town & Country Video in Russell for 10$!

Cool, good ideas guys. Anyone know of any good online sites that sells pretty cheap DVDs too? How are amazon usually for prices?

To start off a movie collection, Columbia House is really good.

Zehrs has cheap DVDs. Sorry, but I didn't look at the titles, but I would guess they aren't titles most of us have heard of.

I just read a review of online DVD rental stores here in Canada, sorry I can't remember the source. But it looks like ~$20 a month will get you 3 movies in your hands, then it's a matter of turn around and shipping time. If Canada post is the only issue, then count on 3-4 turn arounds a month, which means pretty good value..

In the GTA Dixe Value mall (QEW & Dixe RD) has a flea market on Saturday's (it's free) and there is a vendor that buys and sells DVD's, it looks like his 'buy price' is only a few bucks off his sale price which amounts to an unlimited time rental. His selection is fair.

I really question copying movies, how many times do you really want to watch a movie? It's not like hearing that old song again.. to set the mood or change the instance. People used to have large collections of books, in this country we have libraries for that (not to mention the web); do you really need to own the media.... especially with HD quality DVD's coming soon. A good collection of audio would seem to be more apropriate and the media is more mature.

The DVD rental website you're talking about is probably zip, or one of its compeititors. But again, I'm not in it just to watch the movie, but to actually have the original.

Thanks for the tip about flea markets, I dont live around toronto, but I'm sure flea markets everywhere would have the same sort of dude that acts as the Flea Market DVDs Exchange.

I understand where you're coming from, but I dont think I totally agree. Its not just about being able to rewatch a movie, because like you said, theres libaries and movie rentals for that, but its really about owning a piece of it. It doesn't make financial sense in the furthest degree, but it does.

Theres always going to be new media's coming out, HD-DVDs or what have you. But thats just telling people way back in the day not to buy records cause a-trac is coming out, not to buy that cause cassettes are coming out, not to buy that cause CDs are the new rage, and dont even buy that now cause DVD-As and SACDs are coming out. Somethings are just fine and needs to be appreciated as they are.

I'll second this. Buy wholesale pre-watched lots and sell off whatever you don't want.

What I usually do is read the Best Buy/Future Shop/Wal-Mart flyers and find the lowest price for what I want. Then I take that flyer to the highest price and PM it. All 3 of those usually have some good movies for low prices, sometimes in a bundle.

Speaking of bundles, HMV/Music World have a decent selection of 2/$16, 2/$22, 2/$30, and 2/$40 DVD deals going on.

Thats pretty cool, I should hit up HMV tomorrow.

On a side note, did you guys know that at prices like BB and FS, the new release that sell at 25-30bucks almost never have any profit, but its in the "2 for $19" bins that they most of their DVD profit?

dvdsoon.com for new dvd's. no pst since they are in quebec. They will easily price match other dvd retailers(futureshop etc.) as well.
