If you want cheap then you could look into hostels - there's one downtown. There's also the SMU and DAL residences you could look into. Alot of the motels are far from downtown.

+1 for Dal. Stayed at Kings College last summer and I was more then content. Only bad thing is that it's pretty far from most stuff, but it' walkable. About 20-30mins from the main "stuff" on Spring Garden Rd.

I used to live in Res when I went to Dal and I don't remember it being 30 minutes from downtown...perhaps I drank a few too many at the pub so it didn't feel that far lol! I remember lugging back those 2-4's from the liquor store back to Dal, now that was far.

You could also check out the Dartmouth side and take a ferry over. It might be cheaper, but I have no idea.

Default Places to Stay in Halifax

there are tons of places to stay.
University residences: SMU, DAL, Mount Saint Vincent all have residences for students. I think they will rent to travellers outside of the school calendar. I believe motels tend to be a little outside of the downtown area but if you can drive, take a cab or the local transit system everything is within a reaonsonable distance. The major hotels would be the Westin, Lord Nelson, Delta, Windsor, Chateau Halifax, Marriott etc. Future Inn, Bluenose hotel, etc. are about 25 min.s drive to downtown.

you'll want to have a car if you're heading to Peggy's Cove to watch the waves or heading out of the city to explore.

Enjoy your trip!
