Birth Gift for the new mom from new dad?

Not sure if this is the right forum - but I figure the mothers in here can chime in with what they got or would have liked to get?

What is a good "birth gift" to give to the new mom?

Necklaces or bracelets with the birthstone? Maybe something like this?

i didn't get anything from my husband.....and i was in labour on valentines day so i didn't get anything for that either!!

but its okay..i got a new baby..so..i guess that's the best present?

anyways back to your question....if it was up to me, i would want maid and/or meal service for a month

after the birth of our son we had no time to cook, less take care of ourselves or do laundry..so it would be great if someone was in the background, doing all that while we took care of the baby and got some rest and took care of ourselves

its amazing how much a little person demands..even if you are feeding formula, you will be up all day and night trying to soothe him/her, feed him/her every 2 or so hours and changing diapers non-stop...taking a 1/2hr or 1hr nap is GOLD for us..

My daughter was also born on Valentines day, and my wife didn't get anything for that either. But I brought her cupcakes which were some relief.

I have to agree 100% on the maid service for a month. I can't speak for anyone else but my house is a holy terror right now. Lucky for us my MIL is sending her maid over on Wednesday.

Suggestions:

Mom's favourite snacks -- especially stuff she wasnt allowed to eat during pregnancy (i bought a box of nestle drumsticks...hehe)

Photos of the baby + mom at the hospital? Get a nice frame and that could be a nice keepsake

Pff. screw that. She won't even be thinking about a wii or any gift once the kid is out.

I'd say that a gift for the father is much better suited. Maybe a fleshlight or something like that? The first few months are rough..

My husband never got me anything and truthfully I never expected it. I mean the baby is both of ours - which in itself is a gift. Now the biggest thing is the way he acts when I am in labour and before/afterwards with helping out - that is the true gift.

I agree - I was just thinking it would be a nice gesture since Im not the one going through the 9 months of pregnancy or the labour.

No of course it is a nice gesture I'd vote for the maid service personally

As nice as the Maid Service seems...it's a month...then what!? Doesn't do it for me, and dh tried to get me one with #1.

I'd personally opt for a Journey Necklace, Family Ring etc....a keepsake that can be handed down to the child one day. I guess I am a little sentimental.

After each of my 3 kids were born, my hubby brought me flowers to the hospital with a card telling me what a great job I did and how much he loved me. That was all I needed. Oh yeah, and after the 3rd one was born I was starving so he brought me a big mac!
Sure a maid would have been nice, but him telling me that I did great nad that he loved me was enough!

Gifts like this are becoming more common these days and are often refered to "push presents". It is a fairly common practice in England for a husband to buy somethinng like a peice of jewelry for his wife upon the birth of their child.

I bought my wife roses and a diamond circle pendant, not because I felt obligated, but because I wanted to. I thought it was the least I could do after what she had been through.

Funny, I was going to post this same question a couple days ago, but never got around to it! I ended up buying my wife a locket with a stylized mother and child on the front (nice, not cheesy), and room for two pictures inside. She just gave birth to our second son, so I thought it would be a nice thing for her to have.

Anything to do with the kids birthstones is probably a good idea as well, though. Forget services like maid or cooking, I think most women would prefer a keepsake that they will always have.
