Default Best point and shoot?

My Canon A75 has fallen victim to the dreaded E18 error and I'm in the market for a new point and shoot camera. I was thinking either the Canon A530/40 or the sony DSC-W30/50. I like the option of full manual, sd memory and AA batteries on the Canon, although the sony is a nice and small..not too keen on memory sticks and custom battery. Anyone have any experience with either of these cameras or suggest other cameras I should be looking at?

Thanks !

I'm actually in the process of acquiring a Canon SD 700 IS myself; my 4th Digital Canon Camera and no regrets! I love the custom batteries - smaller and lighter usually. Always had custom batteries and never any inconvenience. If you need extras, you can probably get cheaper OEM ones on eBay. Yeah, I don't like the memory sticks either.... I have seen what Sony cameras do and tehy are good too - great lens (Carl Zeiss). The only problem, Sony cheaper models will have less good of a processor / mechanism, but still a great lens. Canon does not have a Zeiss Lens, but still a great one; I would like to think of Canon as a Camera with a better mechanism than Sony, but slightly less good of a lens. If you go for Sony, I woudl suggest checking out the higher-end / more expensive end of their point-and-shoot line.

Anyhow, I don't know the exact model you are getting, but teh only advice I have is Go Canon!

Hope thsi helps!

How do you like the camera otherwise?

it's not bad for the price, but it's a lil bit too thick to put in pocket, but put it in a belt case and it's fine

love the recharable batteries

but sometimes pics turn up too soft

i think the w-5 or w-7 would hv better pic quality than w30/50/70 since the sensor is bigger at 1/1.8" vs 1/2.5

the w-7 can be had for less than $300 in most places now

one of my favs.

no digital processing
