It's BenQ. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole... they're cheap for a reason.

I saw that deal too, but I wanted one with both 8X DVD+R and 8X DVD-R... but that one appears to only have 4X DVD-R.

yet if you read the threads over at cdfreaks or cdrinfo, they recommend the benq 800@822 or the 822 alone

they are cheap, but they work just as well as plextor/pioneer/nec

I bought the 800a from FS (still have to go back and get a price adjustment though), and I flashed it to a 822a

Works well now that I've got the nf2 driver issues solved, but I need more stuff to burn to get a good idea though.

I do not know about that.

cdrinfo review of the benq 822 was hardly glowing:

Pros

8MB buffer
Generous retail package
Fast full seek on DVD/CD
Fast reading speed on DVD/CD
Very good DVD error correction important
DAE speed
Fast DVD-Video rip
Quality CD writing
Quality DVD writing (low PI/PO) important
Fast DVD+R writing
Can playback/rip audio protected discs
Dual layer writing with firmware upgrade (30/09/04) free DL upgrade
BookType change feature important if you want +r to be read as dvd-rom, not alot of dvd burners can do this

Cons

4x DVD- R writing 8x dvd-r is out now, B3IC firmware which most 800@822 users flashed already
2.4x DVD-RW writing this has been fixed to 4x
24x CD-R writing who cares, liteon 52246s right here
10x CD-RW writing who cares, liteon 52246s right here
Does not read C2 errors not alot do anyway
Cannot read leadout information not alot do anyway
Cannot backup protected Safedisc2 games not alot do anyway

course im saying good stuff about it cause i only paid 39.xx CDN including tax for a 800@822, so i can be a bit biased

I wouldn't recommend the drive personally.

Users at videohelp.com rate the 822A a 6.8. Granted there aren't a lot of comments yet.

I bought one of these and so far I am not all that impressed. I was able to use it to burn an Xbox game using Sonics Recordnow but it is not compatible with any version of DVD X-Copy that I have tried so far. I also tried to backup a couple of DVD's using dvdshrink and although it says they burned properly they won't play in either of my home DVD players. I am using Ritek G04 -R media and haven't had any problems with it with my Pioneer A05 burner. The discs read in any DVD player I have tried when using my Pioneer to burn. Guess I will try some other media with it, maybe some +R's and see how I make out with that. Hopefully once they offer the dual layer firmware upgrade it will fix some of these problems. Anyone else have any issues/opinions of this drive?

so are there any dvd writers that do not cost an arm and a leg that are also decent cdr writers?

I only ask this because my lg cdr burner crapped out.

I want to avoid buying another cdr burner and have thought about buying a dvd burner.

I bought it, and I have had no problems reading my dvds with dvdshrink on any dvd player or xbox. Using Nero, Alcohol 120 also works fine.

presenda what kind of media are you using? -R,+R, brand etc? I am having trouble getting it to read with my Ritek G04's.

I also have this drive and it's working flawlessly. Nero, Roxio, Alcohol 120 works fine just like pressenda1844 mentioned above. Using Maxell dvd+r's...
