Default Ask me anything about eyeglasses and the industry

as title...
i figured out I might as well post a 'ask me anything' thread

UPDATE: (Feb 2nd '07)

I have been receiving a lot of quote requests through email, msn, PM...
If you would like a quote, please include the following:

1. Prescription/RX for lenses
2. type(s) of lenses that you like
3. Brand and model of frames

Thanks

General information:

Lenses Material:
Polycarbonate (only comes in 1.59): unbreakable, softer than plastic, 50% lighter than plastic
Plastic: most common type of material, light and not as easy to break as glass
TL Plastic material: Only offered by essilor, a type of plastic that is less prone to breaking and cracking
Glass: most conventional type of lenses, provides thinner index such as 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9, easy to break, suitable for extremely high RX

Lenses type (plastic):
(Thick)
1.5
1.56 - $50
1.59 (polycarbonate) - $130
1.61 - $80
1.67 - $150
1.74 - $250
(Thinnest)

price for all lenses come with anti-reflection, scratch resistant, and UV resistant coating

Lenses Brand:
Nikon: Famous for their HCC (Hard clear coating), amazing scratch resistance
Essilor: Famous for the Crizal coating line, comes with 2 years warrantee on the coating, one of the best manufacturers for Progressive Lenses
Hoya/Sola/OSA...etc. normal brands

Coatings:
Coatings are pretty much standard these days, usually lenses I sell in the store I work at will already include Anti-Reflection, UV Proof, Scratch Resistance, and EMI protection

it depends, they make more on non-name brand glasses
the profit is generally 35%-60% for a pair of RX glasses

u can get nice oliver people's sunglasses from the store i work @, we are the only store in pacific mall that carries it I believe, if you have a particular model you want, we could order it for you

Most oliver's people sunglasses has photochromic lenses (transition lenses) and have a back anti reflection coating, it's one of my favourite brands

they cost around 250-350 tax incld depending on model, their styles are very classic

How long before the transition lenses die out? I heard that after awhile, they get "stuck" in a certain tint.
