I thought Cho played his part pretty well.
He was supposed to be the straight guy to Kumar's outrageous character.
One thing I noticed though is that his facial movements have to be super exaggerated (not being racist or anything but larger eyes seem to convey more feeling unless it's a close-up which the director didn't do much of) otherwise he looked plain.
It's a fun movie. Too bad it bombed at the box office.

Well, let's hope they make enough money to justify making the trilogy, but as it is, I don't see it happening.

How much did it cost to make the movie I wonder? It made about 5 million dollars this weekend according www.imdb.com, but I thought that was decent taking into consideration the popular and hyped movies that are in release right now (spiderman, catwoman, i robot, the village). Harold and Kumar also lacks any household names.
I am going to see this movie though. I think Cho is hilarious.

Oh my god... just watched this at a pretty packed 10pm show...
It kicked so much ass... as good as, or better than Anchorman. If you like dick and fart jokes, and just wanna laugh you butt off at the stupidest things, this is THE movie...

Usually you try to make it back by the 3rd week.
I hear this movie costs around $15 million plus advertising of course (which they spent money on).
But at this rate, it may not be around in general release theatres by then.
I'm sure they'll break even once it hits Asia (and DVD sales) but I was hoping for a $40 mill film domestically. It's been well reviewed but obviously, the US public don't go to no-name movies that sound like it's been made internationally.

I just saw the movie and had to bump this thread.
I liked it. It was the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. I thought both Cho and Penn played their parts very well, although I give the slight edge to Penn, whose performance was just hilarious.
****SPOILERS****
Not sure if this is a spoiler necessarily, but just wanted to be sure and not ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it and wants to. I thought that having Fred Willard, Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser) and Finch from the American Pie trilogy was a real score for a movie that starred two relatively unknowns.
This movie had a lot of jokes about stereotypes that I never really thought about. I also thought it was interesting how they chose to end the movie with Harold and Kumar going to Amsterdam. I really hope they make enough off this one to make a sequel, if not a trilogy.
****END SPOILERS****
I hope this movie does well. Props to Cho for being (from what I heard from his interview on Conan) the first asian-american actor to play a lead role in a Hollywood movie not involving martial arts.

I think you guys are smoking some of Kumar's stash if you thought this was a good movie. It's a bad movie with, at most, 2 or 3 funny scenes in it. It's almost as if they were writing the script as they filmed the movie. The box office numbers also reflect how good this movie was; as of Aug 8th it's made about 12 million US and it cost about 9 million to make. With distribution, advertising and other expense streams that must be taken into account this very low budget movie has yet to break even.
Also, I can't believe someone in this thread was so naive to believe this was the first Hollywood movie with to star an asian american actor that did not involve martial arts.

The movie was really well done. The movie wasn't meant to be taken seriously. If you took it seroiusly then yes of course the movie was crap. This was definately one of the better stoner movies they've released in recent memory. I can't believe they're making a sequal to Dude Where's My Car because that was just horiffic, even if you didn't take the movie seroiusly.

You make no sense whatsoever. Who in this world would ever take a movie about going to White Castle seriously. I can't even fathom someone taking this movie seriously. Seriously, you would need to be mentally challenged to take this movie seriously.
Another thing, this movie wasn't much better than Dude where's my Car - they're both bad movies.

Doubt if it can manage that even if you include its DVD sales. :|

I don't see any reason why you would need to attack anyone for stating their opinion about a movie. I liked it. Some others liked it, and I'm sure some people, like yourself, didn't. Roger Ebert, a Pulitzer winner, seems to like it.
We're talking about a movie that hasn't grossed much, sure, but has also been in limited release and didn't cost all that much to make. Not that I would judge a movie as good or bad simply by it's box office numbers. Pearl Harbour, after all, made 450 million worldwide, and Shawshank redemption barely made enough to cover the cost of making the movie. I wonder how many people would think Pearl Harbour was a better movie than Shawshank?

I think you're discombobulated. Attacking someone is calling them a ******* ***** for even liking this movie - that would be an attack. Asking if they smoked some of Kumar's stash is not. If you took offense then too bad.
By the way, Roger Ebert, a Pulitzer prize winner, also liked Garfield. So he seems to also like bad movies. So your point was?

Better Luck Tomorrow, which also stars John Cho as well as other Asian American actors was released in 2002. It's not the first, but it's a movie I can easily recall because it's very good. Look around for it, I think you'll enjoy it.

Oh well. I'm going to see it because it looks funny, not because I think it's going to be a good movie, but because it's funny. Next time try and see the movie before you give your review. Also, just because a movie has 1 or 2 funny scences doesn't necessarily save the movie from being "crappy" nor does it make the person who called it a bad movie "hippocritical" [sic]. I also don't recall slamming any hippo's in my comments so I can't be "hippocritical" [sic]

It doesn't matter what I think, nor does it matter what you think, BoxsterS. You seem to be in the minority here, so any justification you need to use, go right ahead. There are a few according to the IMDB. Lauren Tom, Rosalind Chao, and probably a handful of the minor characters. I'll admit that this movie probably doesn't count since it is more of an anthology than a character driven movie.

DVDs made 2004 a banner year for fans
By KEVIN WILLIAMSON -- Calgary Sun
The Star Wars Trilogy finally out on DVD.
Harold and Kumar went to White Castle -- problem was, nobody went with them. And if this was just a few years ago, they'd never go anywhere again.
But now thanks to the DVD revolution (or because of, if you're assigning blame), Harold and Kumar may soon be bound for Europe.
The catch? They have to sell a lot of DVDs.
"The DVD (release) gives us a chance to rectify (its poor box office)," Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle's Kal Penn tells the Sun. "The movie can find an audience at its own pace."
And if it does, he confirms there's a script -- Harold & Kumar Go To Amsterdam -- waiting in the wings.

Great movie! Can't believe the girl is close to 30 though with a teenage kid!!
Not sure if someone mentioned this but did anyone catch the "Better luck tomorrow" reference at the beginning?
Kumar + bag of weed scene was the best part!!!

A little late in this discussion, but man, for a movie you didn't like, and one i'm assuming you had no financial investments in, and also assuming the cast didn't steal your liver, you seem to have a lot of hate towards it.
It's a movie, so what if some people liked it... why does it bother you so much that some people actually may have enjoyed it?

BTW, i thought it was the funniest movie of the year. I really do hope they make a sequel, they are like contemporary Cheech and Chong.
Only part i thought was stupid was the leopard ride, but otherwise, the movie was fantastic.

This was definately one of the funniest movies of 2004! I couldn't stop laughing...loving the liberal usage of profanities! Doogie Howser's appearance made it all that much sweeter! ;)

I was gonna buy the Unrated DVD, but decided to wait on it, because I wasn't sure if it's worth it. If any of you have bought the DVD, can you tell me if it's worth the buy and are the special features good? Also, What's the main difference between the Unrated and Rated edition (without giving it away of course)?

I agree, that girl from the movie is really hot, but did you know she is 30 years old and has a daughter. As for the unrated version (i have the dvd), the part where the guy drives by with the chicks on his car is longer, and there might be some extra stuff in the extras section of the dvd, but its mainly garbage.

Yeah I knew that. She's also been married since 2002 lol, but she's still uber hot :D She may be 30, but she doesn't look that old at all. Same thing with Rachel McAdams, She's 28.5, but doesn't look that old.

Finally bought the Extreme Unrated DVD and watched it over the weekend...pretty damn funny! It baffles me that so many idiot movies like Dodgeball make major bank, and a great flick (for its genre) like this doesn't break $20m.
Neil Patrick Harris is my new idol. :cheesygri

Wow, lot of interest in the movie...bunch of replies, lots of readers within a few minutes of my post.

Think it came out the same time as the regular, actually. Got it at HMV as part of a 2/$30 (along with the latest Common album).
It's a bunch of extra features; I've watched them all, it's pretty entertaining. The cost is the same for both at most places, definitely get the Unrated one.
