He is amazing. He has an ability to ring in early and time the completion of the answer/question. Then speaks slowly while he thinks of the question/answer. Plus he is really smart and has a very broad knowledge base.

The other two contestants each day must think "oh *****"

Alex is starting to tease him over his response mechanism.

I've always heard about this guy but I haven't watch Jeopardy at all recently. I tuned in for the first time yesterday to see his streak and man did he every blow his 2 opponents away. I was about to laugh my ass off because it was almost down to just him for Final Jeopardy as one lady was left with $0 and the other had like $400.

This fellow sounds absolutely amazing. I haven't seen Jeopardy! in a long time, but I'd really like to tune in and catch how he works his magic. I'm happy they changed the rules so recently (I think it was in 2003) to allow for winning streaks like this to happen -- a marathon like this gets viewers tuned in and it's a sheerly fun spectacle to watch. Some early detractors of this guy said that all of his opponents are bad, but what are the odds of that by now ;)

I've caught a few of these episodes, and it's damn impressive. I haven't seen him miss a final jeopardy yet, although prior to today, he missed 3 in a row.

Today another contestant started strong, had the lead for a short while, but Ken just kept coming...it was odd, because it didn't feel as if he was totally dominating, but all of a sudden, he's got double, then triple the other guy's score. He cleans up the "superhero" category in Double Jeopardy, and he's off to the races. $34,000 going into the final, and $40,000 to win it.

As a former Reach for the Top master, I'm still blown away by the breadth of this guy's knowledge. AND he's a geek....he's my new hero.

But Jennings Misses Third Straight Final Jeopardy!
...
Yet, for the first time, he failed to draw a single Daily Double. All three went to Miller
Hmmm, makes me wonder if Jeopardy is rigged. What are the biggest wildcards in Jeopardy? Final Jeopardy and the Daily Doubles. This guy could get 80% of the questions right, and still lose if one of the other contestants luck out on the FJ and DD. But this streak must be good for their ratings. Maybe it's like that movie Gameshow(?) with the rigged game show, where they feed the answers to one of the contestants.

Anyways, will be interesting to see this guy in the Champions Tournament.

I wouldn't consider it too odd... A lot of his trivia knowledge comes from reading and writing/editing trivia questions (as opposed to verbally discussing such a wide variety of topics in detail), where pronunciation is a bit of an afterthought.

The guy is a Mormon from somewhere in Utah, he probably spent all of his time in the library reading books. It is often hard to derive the pronunciation of words from a book. It is not like he is this James Bond like, suave figure who has seen every place in the world or been exposed to every language. He is a geek. That may explain that question.

I have been watching his entire run and I cannot put my finger on how he is accomplishing this feat. He is not only winning, but rather annihilating the opposition. He rarely (if ever it seems) finishes double jeopardy with less than double the amount of his nearest rival, so there is never a question who will win, but rather how much money Ken will win.

He is obviously super intelligent, but it seems that he has skill at this game as well. For easy questions, ones that everyone knows, he is almost always first to ring in, almost as if he has it down pat as to the exact instant in which to ring in, beating out his competitors by a fraction of a second. He acts calm and relaxed, and almost seems to operate like a computer, accessing the data banks in his mind (no Celeron here, this guy is without a doubt a Pentium 4 with HT. He seems to say the answer before Alex is even done calling out his name).

These shows were all taped in March so I am sure his run is long over, but supposedly he is being tight lipped about it all, I suppose waitng for the day when his upset airs (although at the rate this dude is going, I think Trebek will be gone long before he is).

And his success seems to come by never betting a bundle on Daily Doubles or in Final Jeopardy, he seems content at just finishing with an even number (if he has 26,400 he will bet 3,600 to finish with an even 30,000). Never too greedy, but I suppose he sees it as a financial plan. Not a bad job hey.......30-40 thousand a day.

Didn't they just double the money values a year ago or something? He should be able to top the single day record. But I guess it's pretty risky to bet all your money in Final Jeopardy.

Hahah, I was just joking. I think Jeopardy is legit, and I don't think Trebeck could pull off something like that anyways. Plus, we know how upstanding those damn Canadians are, eh. But having a big winner like this will draw in more of an audience, increaing their ratings. More advertising revenue. Plus, if he isn't winning, there will be someone else they will be giving their money to.

Pronunciation? There are lots of words that are hard to pronouce. Intonation is important too. A lot of book-smart people have this problem. But because their knowledge is so extensive, they are not going to be able to use all their knowledge in everyday conversations. Wonder if Trebeck would ever go in there and correct a contestant's pronunciation? You know he probably previews all the questions the day before so that he pronounces the words properly. It would be funny if one of the contestants said, "Alex, I believe you meant to say ..., and the question is ...".

Makes you appreciate those spelling bee contestants, that have to know spelling, pronunciation, definition and word origin.

Just a little background of Ken Jennings for those of you that don't know. Steve Beverly who runs http://www.tvgameshows.net is an expert on gameshows. Ive noticed that what he does for the easy questions at least, is he rings in first, then takes his time after ringing in to come up with the answer and reply back.

I've been following this on another board i visit frequently, and they seem to hate his guts over lol. But they say he didn't break the record out of respect for the one who set it or something like that...

Not only is the man intelligent but he's definatley got class.

Jennings: "I'm Intentionally Not Trying to Pass 'That Record'"

Ken Jennings is intentionally attempting to stay away from one of the few Jeopardy! records he has not surpassed.
On CBS's The Early Show this morning, Jennings was asked about his tying Brian Weikle's $52,000 single-day record the last two nights.
"Why not bet another couple of bucks?," asked Smith, repeating the same query Alex Trebek offered on the previous two shows.
"I think it's pretty obvious that I'm trying to intentionally not pass that record," said Jennings. "It belonged to a great player who held that record last season who didn't have the benefit of unlimited winnings. I didn't want to just beat him by a dollar. That would have been a jerky thing to do."

Maybe not a conspiracy, but I'm interested in how they found him in the first place!

They don't have to find people like him. People write in to be contestants on Jeopardy. The only reason he's the first one doing this is because they used to have a 5 day limit for winning players. They then rewarded those undefeated champions with a tournament of champions. Even if there was somebody better than Ken, nobody would've noticed before.

I don't know why they removed the cap, but it's turning out to be a great ratings boost because of Ken.

He almost lost again today, but streak is at 32 and counting! By almost I mean he might have actually had to wager in final jeopardy! to assure victory, but he ended up with 27000 after double jeopardy! and the next closest guy had 13000.

Seems the competition is getting tougher though. The same guy who had 13000 after double jeopardy! actually was leading 12200 to ken's 12000 in the middle of the second round. This was after a ballsy daily double though by the guy who bet almost all his money to end up in the lead.

The thing with ken is he's clutch, and when his competitors get close he goes on tears where he gives like 10 correct responses in a row, dashing their hopes of catching him.

Hmm, if this is true - if this is not rigged in any way... My guess is, they may have to silently pay him off to lose, [so as to get him to quit winning all of the time.] It's great for their ratings, but in the long run, the consequences of having someone on who wins every game might become a negative thing, and they may want to ditch him by now. Also: maybe he will become the next host for Jeopardy?

henryh
Jul 16th, 2004, 04:57 AM
I know how they can have him dethroned.

As I understand it, the rule for Final Jeopardy is that you can't wager more than you have earned, correct? If they scrap that rule, or change it so that you may wager double your winnings, then possibly someone bold can beat Ken in Final Jeopardy. And, to prevent someone from willy-nilly betting a million dollars or something stupid, if you end up in the red (ie. negative amount of money), you have to pay them, a Jeopardy, Simpson's style.

HammerJoe
Jul 16th, 2004, 08:25 AM
I don't know why the rules need to be changed to boot Ken.

If he wins fair and square why try to kick him out?

Sooner or later he will be gone, but let that happen because of the game.

I just hope the stroker that finally beats him doesn't end up losing the day after he beats Ken.

I don't know why the rules need to be changed to boot Ken.

Even with my proposed rule changes, he won't necessarily get the boot. The increased cap with which one can bet in Final Jeopardy applies to all; Ken may up the ante as well. That way, the game isn't decided after Double Jeopardy, as has been the case for the past 30 odd games.

They can't change the rules just because of this one guy. It makes no sense what so ever to change the game so you can oust this guy or make it more challenging for him.

They lifted the 5 day cap so something like this could happen. All 3 contestants each day have a chance to start their own streak if they're good enough.

I thought so too. The other contestant was digging deep for the Daily Double with 2 columns of questions left (speaking of which, I hate people picking slots randomly for some reason. Just like to do things in order, I guess...). Then Jennings hit consecutive DD, which he missed the second one. But that really took the life out of the challengers and turned it into a relatively easy victory

They've apparently already filmed (in April) 2 weeks of shows for next season.

But last night on Leno, Ken commented that maybe he shouldn't be letting Jeopardy writers know that he doesn't know much about cars (since Jay asked him if there's something he doesn't know well)...that implied that he has not yet lost.

As reported by the New York Post.

END OF A REIGN
IT'S over for Ken Jennings . The software engineer from Salt Lake City who'd won 41 "Jeopardy" shows — and $1.4 million — as of last night has finally lost. The episode where Jennings was defeated won't air until the end of the month, and everyone at yesterday's taping signed a strict confidentialty agreement. But PAGE SIX has learned that Jennings — whose winning streak began last season — went down at last. Whoever beat him must be pretty smart.

Well, it was definately a good run...

I think the spoiler is wrong, since from I what I know, they started taping the new season at the start of August. At that point, he had won 38 games, meaning he has to win 37 more games, except that from August until today, there are only 30 weekdays, and that is assuming they tape every weekday. Now keep in mind that Jeopardy will go back into hiatus after next week, for tournament of champions or something like that, so it seems higly unlikely that they taped that many shows in such a small amount of time.

Although they tape *5* show per day, they don't tape every day, or even 5 days per week.

And it is extremely unlikely that this 75 shows guess is accurate.

OK back on topic. I think Ken is really smart. I have often thought I might be good enough to go on Jeopardy, but he would eat me up with his breadth of knowledge. Alex made the comment yesterday that out of the top eight one-day winners, Ken is seven of them! I hope he has some more $50K days, but I think he is more likely to average around $30 K per day over the next month.

"All Ken Jennings has to do is show up on Jeopardy! today to break the last game show record held by Thom McKee.
While King World Productions bypassed promotion of Jennings' 44th straight victory Monday to top McKee's record winning streak during his long Tic Tac Dough run, the series is acknowledging Jennings' 47th straight appearance today.
McKee, the former Navy pilot who now develops commercial real estate in Maryland, was on Tic Tac 46 consecutive days in 1980---a mark for longevity Jennings tied Wednesday.
As with McKee, Jennings finds himself transformed from conventional game show contestant to national celebrity with his amazing run.
More than 400 media outlets have contacted Sony Pictures Television and King World requesting interviews with Jennings. His media access is restricted until his run on the quiz ends."

AP
Utah software engineer Ken Jennings, 30, is the biggest winner ever on the popular quiz show.

Is Jeopardy! champ about to stumble?
Admirers applaud his historic run

VINAY MENON

He has destroyed fellow brainiacs, shattered records, become a household name and spawned the most electrifying streak in game show history.

Since June 2, Ken Jennings, an elfin 30-year-old software engineer from Salt Lake City, has turned Jeopardy! into his magical quizdom, earning a fortune through a lethal mix of trivia wizardry — instant recall, feline-like reflexes and encyclopedic knowledge.

Before we continue, a warning: This dispatch contains spoiler information. Rumours of Jennings' demise — an unfathomable proposition given his sheer dominance — have swirled since September, when blogger Jason Kottke broke the story that Jennings had been dethroned by a female challenger in one of the show's pre-taped episodes to be aired in November.

Sony Pictures, which produces Jeopardy!, won't comment on speculation. (For good measure, the scoundrels also implemented a policy of not returning calls.)

But in the past few weeks, the Ken-Is-Gone! whispers boomed into shouts as the circumstantial evidence grew. Jeopardy! stopped posting Jennings' number of victories before each game, an unprecedented move. And sources claimed Jennings was no longer at tapings.

Then, last week, a source e-mailed an MP3 file allegedly containing the Final Jeopardy segment of tonight's much-anticipated show.

Host Alex Trebek can be heard reading the final answer: "Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year."

The challenger, identified as Nancy, provides the correct question, "What is H&R Block?" This lifts her to $14,401, a dollar more than Jennings. When Trebek reveals the champ's wrong question — "What is FedEx?" — the audience gasps. It's over.

Jennings finishes with $8,799, the first under-$10,000 score tallied during a remarkable six-month odyssey in which he vanquished 148 contestants and set records for the longest winning streak on a game show (74), biggest cash total (over $2.5 million), and a new single-day Jeopardy! record ($75,000).

"Ken is an almost perfect Jeopardy! machine," says Brian Shipley, a Toronto-born historian who lost to the Mormon powerhouse on Oct. 29. "You could hardly design a better player if you tried. His life history encompasses such a diversity of experience, and his personal temperament is so well-suited to the game that a few weeks of preparation to play against him makes little difference."

Adds Jeff Suchard, a doctor, who lost to Jennings on Oct. 4, "I doubt we will ever see another player of Ken's calibre anytime soon. Most contestants know 75-80 per cent of the clues. But Ken is so fast that they rarely get the chance to respond."

The numbers are astonishing. Not including last night's 74th victory, Jennings has answered 2,586 questions; he was first to ring in 2,551 times; he had an 84 per cent success rate on Daily Doubles; he earned an average of $34,133 per game; and, most impressive, he made Final Jeopardy mathematically inconsequential 64 times.

"Of all of the game shows where it is possible to win $1 million, Jeopardy! is easily the most difficult to do so, because it has to be done in increments of $20,000 to $30,000," says Andy Saunders, a Jeopardy! enthusiast and student at Brock University, who compiled a statistical database during the streak.

"Ken's statistics in his first five games, in terms of the number of correct answers he has given, are the highest totals I have ever seen, even higher than the adjusted totals of the great champions of the early 1990s."

The streak is even more impressive when you consider the odds of getting on the show.

Damian Penny, a lawyer in Corner Brook, Nfld., who writes the popular Daimnation blog, tried out in 1998. He calls the entry test "ridiculously hard."

"So I have tremendous respect for anyone who makes it as far as getting on the show," Penny says. "Racking up as many consecutive wins as Jennings is something truly special. It's been good for the show, too. I can't remember the last time a plain, old-fashioned game show had so many people talking about it."

Marc Weisblott, a culture critic and editor of betterlivingcentre.ca, says the streak comes in an age when information is absorbed in new ways.

"I wonder if Jennings would qualify as the last in a line of geeks who learned everything from old-fashioned reference books, particularly The People's Almanac or The Book Of Lists, which seem to get increasingly cited as a seminal influence by pop cult-obsessed types who came of age in the '80s," Weisblott says.

"The era of Google and Wikipedia and a billion blogs may develop a generation that's actually savvier when it comes to cultural reference points. But the absorption process is more selective. There is less chance for exposure to arbitrary factoids that can be kept in cranial cold storage leading up to a game show appearance 20 years down the line."

Jennings is slated to appear on tonight's The Late Show With David Letterman. And A&E airs a Biography special on Jeopardy! champions tomorrow night.

Is this a coincidence? Is his run finally over?

What is: You'll just have to watch.

I'm hoping tonight the entire world gets owned by him winning.

So do I, but it is looking less and less likely that it will happen. I can't see myself watching the show for a while if he gets booted. It just won't seem right. Someone else standing in that first spot? It will be too weird. I have read that the shows ratings have gone up 20-30% from the same time last year, but the ratings actually drop BELOW last years numbers when they have a teen tourney or similar. So the 'show' is not gaining popularity, its all for Kenny.

I want to hear that mp3 of the loss, but the link is dead. I searched last night all over the net to no avail. The site you linked to said that Sony lawyers made them take it down. Does it sound authentic for those who heard it?

I hope this was all a ruse to throw off the public, like the Who Shot Mr. Burns episode of Simpsons. But with Ken on Letterman and the Biography both airing tomorrow, I think his time is up.

RIP Ken.

It just won't seem right. Someone else standing in that first spot? It will be too weird. No, it will make the show enjoyable again. Sure, he was great, but how much fun is it to watch each night as he rips up the competition? I watched him for a while, but I haven't seen Jeopardy for weeks. Too boring.

Anyways, as much as I'd like to believe that he just plain got it wrong, it seems unlikely. As much as I'd like to dislike Captain Goody-goody Mormon, he's too nice of a guy (if a little dorky).

The guy lost it on purpose. He could've answered "What are Santa's little helpers" and it would've been a better answer than FedEx.

Jeopardy! genius meets his match
FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK — The woman who ended Jeopardy! whiz Ken Jennings' 74-game winning streak is a California real estate agent whose own 8-year-old daughter asked for his autograph when they met.

But having an accountant-friend who's nearly impossible to reach at tax time paid off for Nancy Zerg — big time.

In a victory telecast today, Zerg beat a pop-culture icon who had achieved an aura of invincibility. Jennings won $2,520,700 (all figures U.S.), a record for a TV game show contestant, since his first appearance June 2.

During his streak, Jennings usually had opponents so thoroughly beaten that the Final Jeopardy question was meaningless to the outcome. But Zerg was within striking range, with $10,000 to Jennings' $14,400, at that point.

The category was business and industry. The clue: Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year.

Jennings had to think. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Zerg had quickly written her reply.

"I was pretty sure before the music ended that was the ballgame," he said.

Her reply, "What is H&R Block?" was correct and gave her $14,001. Jennings' wrong guess, Federal Express, dropped him to $8,799.

Even before that, Zerg needed an unusual display of Jennings fallibility to stay in the game. He twice answered wrong on Daily Double questions, which give contestants a chance to make a big wager and increase their lead.

Maybe that's why he paused, ever so slightly, when asked in an interview today whether he had lost or been beaten. He then graciously gave Zerg credit.

"I would have dwelt on it if I missed something that I knew or didn't phrase it in the form of a question," said Jennings, a computer software engineer from Salt Lake City. "It was a big relief to me that I lost to someone who played a better game than me."

Zerg, a former actress who lives in Ventura, Calif., psyched herself up before the game by repeating to herself: "Someone's got to beat him sometime, it might as well be me."

Hanging out backstage with fellow contestants, she saw some Jennings opponents had essentially lost before the game. She heard one person say that it looked like he was playing for second, and another just wishing not to be humiliated.

"I heard another one say, `It's no great sin to lose to Ken Jennings,' and they went in and lost to Ken Jennings," she said. ``I thought, `That's no way to play the game."'

Some stats: Jennings' average daily haul was $34,063.51. He toyed with the previous daily record of $52,000 — tying it four times — before shattering it with a $75,000 win in Game 38. He gave more than 2,700 correct responses.

He combined an extraordinary breadth of knowledge, uncanny skill at sensing the precise instant to ring his buzzer and a killer competitive instinct hidden behind a baby-faced grin and polite manner.

It made many of the games boring. But Jeopardy! executives aren't complaining; ratings were up 22 per cent over the same period last time.

Jennings said he'd been thinking about walking away after some future milestone — 100 wins, perhaps, or $3 million or $4 million in winnings. He said there were about a dozen games where one reply made the difference between winning and losing.

"The fact that they had all fallen my way was beginning to worry me," he said, "because at some point the law of averages was going to kick in."

He wasn't prepared for how much he'd miss the daily competition, though.

"It didn't really hit me that was going to be the hard part," he said. "I thought the hard part would be the loss."

The loss is actually a distant memory and not really a secret: the show was taped in early September and news leaked right away. Video clips of his loss appeared on the Internet Monday.

Neither Jennings nor Zerg expect the record will be broken.

"It's not because things fell the right way," Zerg said. "It's because he's that good."

Jennings, a Mormon, will donate 10 per cent of his winnings to his church — and a European vacation is planned, "probably a really nice one." He'll hardly slip back into anonymity; he's visiting David Letterman and Regis Philbin this week, has a book deal and is open to any commercial sponsorship opportunities.

He's in a new tax bracket now, and H&R Block is making sure he'll always remember the company for other reasons: It has offered him free tax preparation for life.

He said on Letterman that since Jeopardy films all five episodes for each week on the Monday, he kept a pretty normal schedule.

Jeopardy tapes 5 episodes in one day...so 75 episodes will take only 15 days to film...assuming that they don't film on weekends, it would take 3 weeks....so he took 3 weeks off of work in two years (since the there was a break between seasons)...taking 3 weeks of vacation for a two year time frame is not that uncommon....
