FIFA rankings are weird -- simply winning (regardless of who your opponent is) will ensure you climb FIFA's ladder in no time ...which is why USA and Mexico are so ranked very high; Even though 99% of the time they're just beating the snot out of teams in the CONCACAF which dosen't take much skill at all.

The ranking is always messed up. the reason the US is so high is because they dominate the other CONCACAF nations and they had a strong couple of world cups. to read how they compile these numbers check here: http://www.fifa.com/en/mens/statistics/rank/procedures/0,2540,3,00.html

ya they are messed up, an a lot of times when they play those so called international friendlys, the country's star players are playing club football so they can't participate in those internationals.
i wouldn't say the u.s.a. suck though. i think they are up there with maybe the secondary elite teams like portugal and sweden.but not at the league of brazil, argentina or france yet.

Correct me if I am wrong.
But I always thought Canada womens team was up there with the US.
The womens team should be ranked higher than eleventh.

They have to RANK the USA high because they're trying to stir up interest in North American market.

all the asian teams got penalized badly, and sent down the list....because not one asian team could make it to final 16....the only continent to not have that...
Iran and Korea didnt play that bad, but were heavily penalized by the cracked out fifa rankings...

I will give you that Iran has a young team but they didn't play very well in the World Cup, losing to a quite average Mexican team and the more superior Portuguese while only managing a draw with an Angola team that they should have beaten.
the Koreans also had a very so-so campaign. I felt that they needed to either beat or tie the Swiss to show the world that their performances 4 years ago wasn't just a fluke.

They inplemented a brand-new ranking system after this world cup that essentially only rewards performance from the last 4 years (meaning that Korea's 2002 world cup run doesn't count anymore). That's why there has been so much movement in the newly announced rankings.

These rankings are before and after the World Cup. How did Canada gain 29 places without doing anything?
As for women's soccer, I believe Canada has one of the best young players in the world right now in Christine Sinclair.

Again, it's a totally NEW system for doing the ranking. It went from an 8 year history to a 4 year history, and things like home/away and margin of victory are not considered anymore. Also some of the weighting coefficients changed to make things more 'realistic'. This started just after the world cup, which is why there are some pretty wild moves in the rankings this time.
