I have a friend who's an employee of HP and will get 25% off a laptop. Which one should I get? I will be able to expense it since I am a contactor, and will be using it for work and at home for personal use. I have high-speed at home and will go wireless.

My main questions are:

Should I go with a mobile processor or the regular one?
Which model should I go for? HP Pavilion, NC or NX?
Does anyone have an HP laptop? How are they? Any reviews?

I know that I want a fast machine that will last me a while and I don't want shared ram with video card, I want a 7200 rpm hdd etc.

Please help me select a laptop.

TIA

Depends on your usage. If you need to game on it, then get something with more graphics power and toss battery life, weight, and size out the door.

Personally, I've always liked my notebooks to be long on battery and light in my bag.

I like some of the lighter NC or NX series.

Given the nature of your job, I would recommend you check out the TC1100 tablet PC, you'll get alot of flexibility from the pen input while on the job. Plus it's easy to carry around and has good battery life.

Depending how often you will be on the road or at the office will help you decide which notebook is best for you. Notebooks with Intel Centrino mobile technology will give you better battery life than those with the Pentium 4 processor.

25%? You may want to double check with your buddy. I have a few friends who work at HP and they have never quoted me anything even close to that (and these guys work on the PC side).

Also, check out pcoutlet.com. I know that they give discounts to HP employees. You can actually go to their store and take a look at the units too. Also, even though it says refurbished, some of them are just open box (call to ask). Mine came with a full warranty.

Just confirmed with my buddy - it is 25% off. Also checked out pcoutlet.

Can anyone recommend any models?

A couple of questions:

Can you get a Compaq notebook since Compaq is owned by HP now ?
Do you get 25% of the listed price on hpshopping.ca ?

milhaus has the Compaq X1000 widescreen laptop and has very positive experience with it. Moreover the prices listed at hpshopping.ca are quite high to begin with and if you get 25% off then you are not getting that much of a good deal.

Yeah, I'd suggest getting the HP branded version of the X1000 series. They also sell the Hp branded version at BestBuy. They're basically the same computer, I think? See www.X1000forums.com for opinions. They have a section for the HP equivalent. I would agree with Jerry that the prices may not be too good, even at 25% off.

I'd say X1000 series laptops are well recommended as well. I was looking at an X1360 before I settle for my toshiba M30.
