Last minute flight deals?

I've never been a last minute planner for vacations. But I have family who have booked a vacation to HK in Dec... and I could tag along if I could possibly find a cheap return flight.
I dont mind buying last minute tickets... but where would I go look for them? How does this work usually?

For the most part, last minute flight deals are only offered by charters. Usually (although not always) flights on non-charters become more expensive if you wait to the last minutes. And there are no charters that fly from Canada to Hong Kong.

So while there may be a chance of pickup up a cheap last minute ticket, it's likely a very low chance.
