No 3G unless you're on a AWS network (WIND, DAVE and Videotron). Nokia won't be making this phone in any other band. Works in 2G only on Fido and Rogers; won't work at all on Bell/Telus.

This is the new Nokia flagship device with Maemo/Linux and full Firefox browser (full Flash support). If you don't already know what it is, you probably don't want it.

The n800 can run android with VMware. I am presuming you could do the same with the n900. if that's the case then it opens up a whole other world of applications.

They meant no 850mhz 3G band. Otherwise, the N900 is a quadband phone... Also FYI, I've owned an SE P1i, worked pretty much everywhere in Toronto without the 850mhz band...

No. Bell and Rogers has the spectrun license for this band, but they haven't built a network on it yet. Only WIND/DAVE/Videotron.

You could use a Bell Mifi and expose the wifi to it and use Bell 3G indirectly, but that's the closest you'll get to using their 3G until they build the network with the AWS they got.

I've had an N800 (older brother of this N900) for about 2 years and love it as a WiFi tablet.

We get screwed and miss on the best devices due to regional protectionism: north american carriers want to own every aspect of the customers business so network frequencies are not compatible with anything else. Reminds me of the DVD regional settings.

European (nokia) and overseas (htc) manufacturers focus on their own markets, and north american developers are generations behind.

I believe whoever manages to launch a 900/2100 Mhz HSPA network in Canada will make a ton of money offering service to all the "nomad" unlocked cellphones out there.

That would be NOONE. There's a reason why the frequencies are assigned the way they are. 900 and 2100 (BAND I) just doesn't exists in North America because it overlaps with existing usage. Nothing short of the government recalling all frequencies and re-issuing new bands will this ever change... and then you have hundreds of millions of existing North American devices that will no long work.

You would spend billions trying to rebuild and test all wireless networks. It's much easier just to add handset support like they do with quad-band GSM -- which worlds nearly everywhere in the world.

1700 AWS is the new standard in North America as nearly all carriers have spectrum in this frequencies. Rogers/Bell/Telus, each individually, has twice as much AWS spectrum than any of the new carriers. It's just a matter of time before Bell/Telus and Rogers/Fido use their AWS spectrum... the same spectrum your N900 operates on.

Read up on why Bands are so ****ed up in NA.

You can pretty much blame it on PCS.

The carriers had the full intention of harmonizing with Euro banding, they just couldn't.

But I'm really familiar with its consequences: too many cool products that I can't utilize properly. I believe it doesn't make much sense to spend all that $$$ at this day an age for a phone that can't run HSPA (at least in the locations where I'd use it most).

Going back to the post topic: I believe the N900 is a wonderful piece. Maemo has never dissapointed me. From my N800 I do telnet, VNC, etc.

Yeah, I like you look with envy at all the phones our Euro counterparts get to enjoy before us.
Like I mentioned, carriers had the full intention of harmonizing their bands with European carriers.
I'm sure the manufactures wished it had worked out as well, it would have resulted in more sales and less delays delivering their products to the market.

But really there isn't anything we can do about it unless the government reassigns occupied bands.

Yes it makes absolutely no sense to buy a device that can't be used to it's full potential.

I cringe every time I see someone justifying buying a smartphone and simply relying on Wifi and claiming they are getting a full experience.

While I understand people have financial restriction preventing them from getting a data plan, do not try to make people believe you're getting the most out of your smartphone without 3G data.
