View Full Version : Do I have to rake up my leaves?

So my neighbor is upset at me because I have not raked any leaves. It's true. I have not raked in any leaves and I don't feel that I should have to. Why? Simply put, I don't have any trees on my property that contribute to the amount of leaves collected on our street. All of the trees on my property are evergreens. I do not have one deciduous tree. Now before anyone says you have one out in the front that belongs on government property, hold that thought. Well I do have one, but it's dead. It's just a tree trunk and branches and I don't really care for it.

It's rare for me to be at home so I don't see my neighbors all that often. I'm usually out of the house by 7:00am and I don't return until around midnight during the weekdays. I got home yesterday and found a note in my mailbox from one of my neighbors that they would appreciate it if I raked my leaves. Sorry, I'm not home during the day. And even if I was, I wouldn't do it because of my reasoning posted above. If my neighbors aren't happy with me I really don't care because like I said we hardly run into each other.

Am I being a ass? Probably. But I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. If I don't have any leaf shedding trees I don't see why I'm obligated to rake up leaves.

I regularly cut my grass. I shovel my snow during the winter. Heck I even shovel the sidewalk on both sides up to the driveways so they have less to shovel. Yet now I get a complaint that I don't rake my leaves. Oh well. You can't satisfy everyone in life.

I thought that leaving a layer of leaves on your lawn was a bad idea because if you layer snow on top of it, then it's very bad for the grass re-growth the next year? Maybe this is an urban legend. Can someone confirm?

Lower your lawnmower and cut the grass as low as possible. All the leaves blow across your lawn and land on theirs, but you did not hear that from me...:)

My Mom's tree took much longer to start shedding it's leaves. My two kids helped rake up 4 bags worth 2 weeks ago from other trees. Now that her tree is losing it's leaves we have more leaves to rake up while her neighbour's tree is leaf less. The wind won't blow the other way and put all these leaves onto that property.

There may be a by-law that requires you to rake the leaves on your property. Call your township office to find out.

There isn't a layer of leaves covering the lawn. I would say only about 30% of it is covered.

I think that people who don't have the time to do chores are people who have higher priorities. Amazing how ppl always find the time to catch that hockey game, for example. The law may not require you to clean up the leaves, but it'd be neighbourly if you did, 'cuz the wind will blow the leaves all over the place until spring.

Why not do it? I did it in front of our house even though I was in the same position ... took 30mins ... I didn't do it because of the neighbors but because I wanted to clean up the front of the house.

I dont get it, why does everyone care so much about leaves? Neighbourhood looks so much better when the leaves cover the grass and the road. Tell him you will get it in a few weeks by then the snow will take care of it.

actually, logic would tell me that the decomposition of the leaves over winter&spring will provide nutrients for the grass to grow better the year after.

someone correct me on this?

I swear my neighbour wakes up in the middle of the night if he hears a leaf hit his lawn!!

There is never anything on his lawn for more than an hour, and then BAM he is out there cleaning it up.

Of course the problem with this guy is that he will rake up the leaves on the street and pile them up at the end of his neighbours driveway rather than put them in a bag. This act alone drives me crazy.

This is the same neighbour that if he finds garbage blowing around the street that doesn't belong to him, rahter than picking it up and putting it in his garbage bin, he puts it at the bottom of my driveway for me to toss out.....and it's not even my garbage!!!!!

The other day I came home (not in a good mood to be fair), and there it was.....the pile of leaves at the bottom of my driveway again. Well I LOST IT! I started cursing and swearing and kicking the leaves all out into the middle of the street like a 4 year old child. Yes I know it was a little childish of me to act that way, but one read story does not make up for the years of garbage abuse this guy has put me through! LOL......

I came out my door the other day in a great mood, when the smug so and so yelled over to me, "nice day eh, you should be out here raking up your leaves". I held my breath, turned blue, bit my tongue and almost filled my shorts in anger (another 4 year old thing to do), then just smilled back and got into my car and drove away.

So to answer your question, HECK NO DON'T DO IT!!!

Out of pure principal I am not cleanig mine this year.........okay I will, but not for a few more weeks. I want to try and send them over the edge just like the do me.

Besides I could come home one day and have it all done for me?? :cheesygri

Shhhhhhhh.........did you hear that???

A leaf fell on my neighbours lawn........lets see how long it takes for him to go outside and clean it up............oh never mind, there he is!!!

Leaves left to rot in the snow will destroy the grass underneath. Surely you have an area of grass that you left leaves on year after year and is now just soil and refuses to regrow.

I usually wait until half my leaves blow over to my neighbor's house heh heh heh. This year I got a nice surprise as the wind blew first to the left, then to the neighbor to the right. Oh yes, I transferred about 1.5 hours of work over to those fine folks on either side of me

Hey, how much is that leaf sucking gadget cost on page 1 of this thread?

Why does your neighbor care if you rake your leaves? Tell him you care about the environment and would rather have all of the great nutrients decompose into the soil over the winter than have to resort to fertilizer.

I have like 5 giant trees on my lawn and NEVER rake my leaves. I don't know why people do it - they are all gone by the time the snow melts. Heck they are about 50% gone already and it has only been 2 weeks.

You'd never win a lawsuit while walking on a frozen area of lawn as it is not an area intended for walking. Lawn != driveway, I don't have to make sure my entire property is a slip-free zone, thanks.

No, you don't HAVE to....

From experience, layers of non-mulched leaves + wetness will damage the grass underneath when the next spring season rolls around due to snow mold growth. However, if you mulch the leaves, then it may help grass growth/appearance when the next season arrives. why rake when you can mulch them through your lawn mower while you're cutting your grass? Plus, mulch leaves will help your garden bed as well. Killing a couple of birds with one stone!

I for one detest raking leaves. The first time I raked leaves was at age 8 ( I felt bad for my parents who usually came home all tired from work. I thought of "treating" them with a 1 less house chore by raking the leaves that year ( plus, secretly jump in a large pile of fall leaves without them knowing lol). I was all pumped up for the job, garden gloves-check, sweat pants-check, comfy shoes-check, headphone and cassette player + ear/head bad - check, 2 rakes - check. All set and good to go.

Six hrs and a half (from 1pm till 7ish) plus 23 stinkin' bags full of compressed leaves later, THIS chore came with a wonderfart yet very unexpected prize/bonuses - tired, sweaty, hand blisters and my new - yet now dirtied Nike shoes. It was pretty much an "expect the unexpected" experience. My parents were happy while I was in much pain for any child to endure at that time. I vowed not to rake another leaf again. Well came the following next 9 Fall seasons, guess who was ASKED to rake it after doing such an excellent job the first time 'round. This was at their old house.

Their new property (5 years ago) is much worse; it's back up to a mini forest/ravine. It took 3 people to finish raking all the leaves in 5 hours. It's not that I don't have the guts to say "no" to my dad ("Hi, glad you're home - how long are you staying? Wanna help me rake some leaves?") - but i just feel really bad if i left him raking it on his own while knowing the "grueling" experience that comes with it afterward.

Not until last year, one of the best purchases I bought for him: a leaf blower. 5 hrs is now cut down to approx. 30 minutes.

After a decade+ of raking leaves - I never reached that main/actual goal that got me started in the first place - jumping in a mountain pile of leaves.

my a$$hole neighbour likes to use his gas blower to blow anything that touches his lawn onto the road in a nice little pile. usually at 8;am on a sunday.

In some areas you are supposed to do this. For example in mississauga in areas where the trees are a bit more mature, the city instructs you to rake the leaves to the curb and every couple of days during the fall a big vaccuum truck comes by and picks them up.

Not much decomposition happens over the winter (its cold right, kinda like a fridge/freezer, y'know where things organic tend to be preserved?).

Its your lawn and house, you can let it look like crap if you want I suppose:confused:...to a certain point anyways.
But your neighbors dont have to like you for it.

I'd say you might want to consider being a bit more adult about it, or move into a condo/apartment/grumpy old folks home where you dont have to worry about things like this.

You can write a note back to them explaining your situation much like you've explained to us. Sometimes it really takes a simple note.
The fact your neighbours wrote you a note probably means they care enough already to ask. Most people would just keep getting angry, and call you names behind your back while probably avoiding you like the plague every time they see you. Now I don't know if that's what you do to your neighbours, but really, if you see them just let them know that you're too busy to rake the leaves.

My family has had a fairly rough relationship with the neighbours to our left as well, but its mainly because of the lack of communication between the two families. Usually I'll take the initiative and talk to them if I see them outside. One or two conversations and things usually turn out better, granted you aren't talking to them with a tone of menace of some sort.

Putting the leaves on your garden bed is actually a pretty good idea as theoretically they will prevent frost damage to new growth in the spring (you know you get a week or so of warm weather and then boom...snow again...right before the warmth comes all the time...)...

Leaving leaves on your grass will kill the grass if there is a lot...a few will not be a problem but it's just an excuse to be lazy and not take care of one's property in *my opinion*...

Oh well. You can't satisfy everyone in life.

where do u live?

Hire a kid in the neighbourhood or ask a neice/nephew to do stuff. I pick up litter all the time - it sure ain't mine.

I work full time during the day. During the evenings I spend time at my girlfriend's then I come up to sleep.

So why don't you invite your girlfriend over one evening and the two of you can rake up the leaves. There is no excuse for not taking care of your property.

Agreed...just wish more people in Brampton would follow this advice...lots of relatively new houses have the paint peeling off, dandelions all over the grass (uncut usually)...just an eyesore...

Just write them a letter : "Hi please leaf me alone; you and your rakish wife."

hahaha...

+1... unless it is your responsibility to be at your GF's every evening until midnight. Owning a property comes with responsibilities, whether they are written in the bylaws or not.

actually, logic would tell me that the decomposition of the leaves over winter&spring will provide nutrients for the grass to grow better the year after.

someone correct me on this?

They never decomposed completely for me. Even if I had shredded them with the garden waste shredder, they were still there until late summer of the next year. In the spring, they'd be moldy and stink. I can only imagine what your lawn would be like if you didn't clean them now or in the spring.

I'm not condoning what your neighbour is doing however, I've had my share of a neighbour harassing me to do this and that. I've always caught up with my household chores on my own.

I am in the same situation as I have no trees that drop leaves that belong to me and my yard was full of leaves. When I noticed this I grabbed a rake and raked my leaves.

Some people..............

Just rake your leaves dude. It'll take tops 15 minutes, and they come suck it up from the side of your lawn. Stop being so lazy.

Just rake the freaking things up and stop being so lazy!

One it doesnt make you look like a slob to everyone who lives or drive by. and could effect the value of the neighborhood. Second all your leaves are blowing onto his lawn which he has to keep cleaning up!!

I bet you are one of those people who leave their grass until its a foot high then cut it. And your house has no character once so ever. Aka: no Garden anything!

If you lived next door to me I would be thrilled to blow all the leaves onto your door step! And if you confronted me over it I would punch you in the face.;)

I quit raking leaves 2 years ago. I have tons everywhere, but then the wind blows and their gone down the road into the field. Where the wind doesnt hit they stay, so I just get rid of them in the spring.

I find now that I dont live in the city Im not so anal about my lawn anymore.

theres a church behind my backyard with a big tree that sheds leaves like crazy... but oh well, it gives us some privacy and blocks out the sun, and not like the nuns will come over and rake it.

I've raked over 20 bags of leaves and they are still falling. But on a windy day there is no way to keep them from blowing off the tree into the neighbours yard. It's not a big deal because I've raked many a maple leaf without having a maple tree in my yard. ;)

Sounds like it wasn't even the OP's immediate neighbour. Just someone from the block or around it, that gets annoyed with the enjoyment of the scenery.

I would just politely write back if they haven't identified themselves and pretty much respond it is not your irresponsibility that someone's tree is causing a mess on your property therefore to request not causing a mess everywhere from the originator of the person's tree or if its on city property, the city.

Broseph maybe you should post a sign in your yard:

"Neighbours come claim your wayward leaves that have accumulated in my yard."
