View Full Version : Clean your eraser shards after an exam!!

I fail to understand, why people, after writing an exam, don't sweep off the eraser pieces off their desk. It literally takes 5 seconds to do, I've done it ever since I was in Kindergarden.
Granted, they don't pose the same unpleasantness as someone who leaves peices of lunch or pools of sweat at their desk/table, but it still seems to me as something very wierd to do.
It seems to me like half the people who write exams in university/cegep couldn't be bothered to brush off shards of eraser left after furiously erasing on an exam.
Am I the only one bothered by this?

Maybe because it's not "their" desk, so they feel no desire to keep it clean? Also, the next person using it won't know who left the eraser bits before them.

Hmmm interesting. I did all my university exams in pen. Of course I made no errors so there was no need to erase anything.
BUt I do see that Scantron cards insist on pencil.

I can see how it can be annoying, though I've never been annoyed by it. Personally, I don't wipe my eraser shreds off my desk after an exam. I never really thought about it.

Reminds me that last year during the midterms, I walked into a classroom which just finished one, and I saw that someone made a string of eraser shards, it was a good metre and half long

And folks, it's feelings like this (not singling you out specifically) that are behind the scum of modern society. Nobody feels like they have responsibility anymore, nobody feels they have accountability anymore - it's all somebody else's problem.
It's something as simple as brushing off your own eraser shavings off the desk, but no, it'll be somebody else's problem because you don't feel the need to have your responsibilities in modern society. Just like the people who willingly litter on the public transit system. It's not their problem because somebody is paid to keep the system clean. It wouldn't be anybody's problem if you fking slobs had any self-respect for yourselves. Or in the food court, people leaving their eat-in trays behind on the table because either, (A) somebody will be by shortly to collect your tray, or (B) the next person(s) will have to deal with it. I could go on and on.
Apologies for the rant but I feel it ties in with this new (maybe not so new) mentality that it'll always somebody else's problem to deal with, because people nowadays feel that they need to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

When I finish an exam, I'm not thinking "I'm going to make this table nice for the next person", I'm thinking "****, I hope I didn't fail". You just don't think about something like this.
I understand where your point of view is coming from. I hate people who just leave their food on the table, or feel they don't need to move to the back of the bus, but I just think you'd be too focused on the exam to even think about something like wiping for the next person.

The thing is, a school with a proper janitorial system will have the floors swept regularly, so that isn't a big issue IMHO. I don't think it's a lot of extra work for the janitor, and it makes a lot more sense to just sweep it up.
What IS a lot of work is to wash tables tons of little bits on them.
Anyway I think asking everyone to nicely pick up eraser bits and throw them in the trash _IS_ a little much, and I'm not too fond of potentially scooping up germs into my palm (as a opposed to brushing stuff away with the outside of my hand)

I would expand on that by adding the mounds of garbage people leave in public places - aluminum pop cans, torn-down fliers, etc.. I've found myself, out of pure annoyance, picking up some of these things and depositing them at the nearest garbage receptacle. I've had family members asking me why bother, saying that there are garbage folks around that do the job.
Just because it's someone's job doesn't make it right. I don't know about eraser shards, but it strikes me as being snobby to toss something on the ground and have someone say "it's their job, so what?"

I'm pretty sure people after an exam just want to get the hell out and don't think of wiping eraser shards off the desk.

If I left enough eraser dust to bother you I'm sorry. But I left the erase dust because I was making a lot of mistakes and was really worried about my grade. I was very focused and the only thing I could think about after the exam was what I did wrong. Sorry I forgot to clean up after myself.
haha but seriously, the person who left the eraser bits was probably going through a tougher time than your cleanliness issue so cut him or her some slack.

I'm not buying the exam stress theory. Once you've submitted your exam, in most cases, even if you've failed, you are immensely relieved that its over.
And you have to go back to your seat to collect your things in many cases...
It's just a curiosity more than an annoyance. I made this thread mostly for the lulz part.
I just wanted to know WHY more than anything.

Library noise can be minimized with proper intervention from security.
I know what you mean, my library "quiet floor" was more like a group work floor, and the group work floor was a zoo.
Instead of enforcing the rules, they had some idiot liberian scream SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH to everyone at the top of her lungs every 30 minutes, which was effective at shutting people up for about 30 seconds.

Heh, you beat me to that comment.
I have never heard anyone refer to "eraser shards"! They're not hazardous enough to warrant the "shard" moniker.
For people who use pencils in university exams: you should realize that it's a lot easier to deal with the professor/TA regarding marking errors and grade discrepancies if you write in pen. I used pens to write all my engineering exams... yes, I did cross out a lot of stuff, but there is no limit to the number of exam bookets you can use ;)

That's nasty.
I had a guy during a few of my first year Calculus 2 class that would clear his throat (sounded like he was hoarking (sp?)) every 5 mins for the whole 2 hour lecture. OMG most annoying kid ever!! By the end of the class whenever he cleared his throat, 4-5 other people would imitate the sound, the professor would turn around and looked mighty confused.

That's why you have unlimited amounts of scrap paper to work things out before you put your final answer in the exam booklet. That or you have unlimited exam booklets.

One time, the person writing the same exam in the morning period wrote all of the answers on the table and I had to request to be switched to at another table... people these days.
Then after the exam, the Procter told me she was late for a Victoria's Secret photo shoot and she can't drive her Enzo Ferrari in her high heels, so she asked if I can drive her to the set in her sports car. I told her to leave me alone and take the bus.

Scrap paper is usually not provided, because then people walk out of the test with all the questions written down.
Since teachers are too lazy to come up with new questions every year this would be a liability for them.

its all physiological,
its like when you sit beside someone you know is going to do bad, it's meant to boost your confidence, knowing that you not doing as bad as him or her. Only works if you get to choose where you can sit.
you could use the same reasoning with eraser bits/shards, the more there is, the greater the chance that the person before you did bad, and you could only do better then he or she.
Few weeks back, I had some guy sitting right next to me, no seats in between, coughing like mad, so annoying when you trying to concentrate and read and answer the questions and trying to avoid whatever he had. ARGHHH!!!
