Warm price. No HDD, but just built yourself one for way cheaper than the Shaw Expander.

BB $229.98: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10129271&catid=28559

FS $299.99: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10129271&catid=24994&test_cookie=1

PM ~$223.00
Just picked one up for my dad this morning.

so isn't the title inaccurate? seeing as its just a receiver and the PVR portion is separate?

It is a PVR, you just need to add a hard drive.

Thanks for the post. Going to try to get price protection since I bought it last month.

i have the pace aspen which i believe is the same as this one without the hard drive. can anyone verify this?

also, could i add a hard drive to this unit internally. in other words, could i open up the unit without voiding the warranty?

I successfully got price protection on this from BB. For those that bought it online, remember the 30 days of price protection starts from the day the unit arrives, not the date of order/shipping.

Overall great price and if you call Shaw now, they are offering the 1TB Expander HD for 150.

how so? even in BB's title (Shaw Pace HD Receiver (DC758D)) it just says receiver. As it stands theres no way out of the box that thing can be a PVR, its just a receiver with upgrade option to a PVR.

whatever im not here to nit pick i was just stating a fact that the title is inaccurate, no one is going to buy it based off a thread topic anyway.

Thanks for the post OP! Just bought this a few weeks ago at FS. Will PM now.

Is it really just as easy as adding a HDD yourself in any SATA enclosure? Or do only certain enclosures work? Will any HDD size will work?

I'm wondering if one of those would work for me, my cable and internet provider were recently acquired by Shaw, I guess the only way to know for sure would be to call them. :|

Yes, it's literally as easy as plugging in an external HD. Be wary, though, that some enclosures (typically those with USB and/or Firewire ports) are YMMV. I've used a Vantec Nexstar3 enclosure with WD Green 1TB drive on my Moto 6412 and it's been stellar.

On a related note, I'm getting a second one and am deciding between the 3416, which will be more expensive, and this Pace. I've had good reliability from the Motos, but I've heard some iffy things about the Pace. Anyone with experience on both care to share their opinions? Is it worth saving the ~$75, or do I just stick to what I know? I'm probably going to be adding the 1TB drive regardless, so that part of the equation will stay the same.

I didn't realize its possible to add an external HD to the Motos. I just bought the Pace, but if the Motos work too, I might as well keep the old one.

I have a pace (not the same model as the shaw ones) and its a piece of CRAP, I had to exchange the first one I got as it constantly made a loud chirping/squeaking nouse, the thing is so damn loud and the response time is very slow, if I had the option I definatley would have gone with motorola as it has been flawless for my brother who has cogeco.

With the new firmware now you can put an external or even open the box out and replace the drive with a 1tb internal, you have to format it externally first

Yep, Shaw just added the support for external HDD last month.
You can follow the thread here: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=112018

eSATA HDD's only. Try and get an enclosure without firewire. Apparently the Vantec Nextar 3's work well, but get pretty hot. The Antec MX-1 actively cooled enclosures also seem to work according to the thread, as well as the Thermaltake BlackX docking station.

Shaw upgraded the firmware automatically through the cable line for the Motorola 6416 and 3416 so that they can add an external hard drive by plugging it into to the ESATA port.

For those who have the Motorola DCT 6200, you can not add the external hard drive to it.

The new Pace does not have a hard drive. But you can combine it with the Shaw external PVR hard drive (re-badged Western Digital My Book with 3 year warranty). $229 for Pace + $149 for External 1 TB hard drive = $379.

Almost no point buying the Moto DCT 3416 or 6416 even though Futureshop is blowing them out at $399....only 160 GB.

I agree if it was price only I'd buy the Pace 758 and put together my own external HD, but I don't know enough about these Pace machines. I've heard marginal/crappy things about the older models, but wasn't sure if they've made significant strides on QC since. With Motos, they're generally rock-solid (at least the ones I've had). Trying to see if the price differential is justified.

Picked one up today and can confirm that the Antec MX-1 works for external expansion (running an old WD 250GB HDD).

Is this HD receiver the same one sold by Shaw on their site?

http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Television/HDTV/HDTV-Hardware.htm

It looks like the same thing. Although the Shaw does not mention the model or brand. If it is the same one, then its a good deal. Must as well save $70 if it is the same thing.

I called Shaw earlier today to activate external HD support on my Moto 6416. Other than the long wait to talk to someone it was painless.

I used some parts I wasn't using anymore to get the external HD. 250GB WD drive + Nexstar esata/USB HD case.

I just might work. I have an old 6200HD which I purchased for 100 bucks from FS 3 or 4 years ago. It was Rogers branded and supposed to be only sold in east, but I took a chance. That was also when Shaw added outside boxes without much issue.

Just had a quick look here: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=112018

"The index for the recordings is on the internal drive, so you cannot move the eHDD without "losing" access to your recordings on that (external) drive. If you format/use the (external) drive elsewhere, then your (external drive) recordings will likely be gone."

It looks like you won't be able to do this.

It looks like you won't be able to do this. That's unfortunate. I was thinking that I could get two of these boxes and transfer the HDD between them as needed (record on one and watch on another). I guess that's not possible. Looks like Bell is still the only provider who allows that.

I believe its on sale for the holiday's through Shaw for $150 until January 15th. It's also on sale at Futureshop until Nov 12th. It's advertised on the flyer but not online. You can also get it at London Drugs for $150, until Nov 20th.

A Shaw person also indicated that Shaw was currently selling the Expander for $150. Is this just in Winnipeg and Vancouver or elsewhere too?

Not bad of a deal for $379 ($229 and $149.99), you get a PVR Slim with 1 TB drive.

I was at BB (Cambie + 7th) and they still had signs in store for $229 also. LD on Cambie and Broadway did not have either of these two items. The sales guy had no clue what he was talking about either--stated that you cannot get this PVR anyway right now and that you would get only one tuner...

i think we'll have shaw come look at our standard PVR, it's very very noise right now, the fan is always super loud, even when it's off. perhaps i'll have them bring an expander for $150 at the same time for our Moto HDPVR. would be nice to have that extra space and for 1TB external with 3y warranty, it seems like a good deal.

the 1/2 off was usually for the MOTOROLA PVR, i can't see them offering anyone a deal on the new PACE stuff, it's brand new. most deals like the 1/2 off, or free lease or free outright were REFURBS, still with full warranty, but not new and not new releases.

also, some people are not getting any deals when they phone and ask, so any sale of shaw stuff is decent for them.

Slight correction, the refurbs did NOT have a full warranty -- one year (vs 3yrs for new). That's the reason I actually returned my free 6416 rental. At a $350 buyout for a refurb, I could get a new one for $399, probably a bit less if FS/BB have some additional coupons in the next little bit. Just hurt to lose all my recordings, though. >:(
